Headstones proving
vulnerable to Y2K
Who says the Y2K problem isn't a matter of life and
death?
Some people who never thought they'd live to see the
next century have purchased headstones with the
foresight of a computer programmer.
Monuments marking their final resting places
include partial dates of death that begin with the
numbers "19". -
It's enough to give Scrooge a fright and he hasn't
even seen the bill to re -do the headstone. Costs range
for $100 to $1,000 depending upon whether one tries
a touch-up job or resurfaces the whole monument,
said Bill Dinney of Monuments by Dinney.
Raised numbers can be chiseled off, sunken numbers
filled with granite chips.
But close observers may notice even the best repair
jobs, said Bill Dinney. Exeter and surrounding
Cemetery's likely have several headstones with the
Y2K problem, most purchased decades ago when one
spouse predeceased another. But even those who
held off on a date with death may have a problem,
said petroglyphologist (monument engraver) Wayne
Cowell of Exeter.
Some inscriptions left just enough space to chisel a
date which begins begins with "19" - but not one that
begins with the wider "20".
If you find out you have the problem of the Y2K on
your headstone give Bill Dinney of Monuments By
Dinney a call at 519-235-3500 for a free consultation
