Spring field sports return to South Huron High EXETER — Spring is in the air and that means rugby and soccer on the pitch at South Huron District High School. The Panther senior boys rugby team were shutout by Petrolia in their first game of the season last week. Coach Terry O'Rourke said the seniors put in a good effort considering many are new players. The juniors lost 7-5 to Petrolia. The game was knotted in a scoreless tie when South Huron's James Atkins scored a try on a nice run with only a couple minutes left in the game. The Panthers missed the convert. Petrolia tied the game by scoring a try in the refer- ee's discretionary extra time and then converted for the win. "It was a ragged but intensely played game and a very good effort consid- ering the inexperience of the team. The girls started their season at home Monday with a 45-5 win over St. Marys. Irish down 2-1 in all -Ontario final series versus the defending champs By Craig Bradford TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Jr. D Irish coaching staff have some simple advice for their players — stay out of the box! That's the short mes- sage Lucan co -coach Jason Bukala had for his players after losing their last two games in their all -Ontario charnpi- onship final series to the defending champs, the Wellesley Applejacks. Wellesley leads the best of seven series 2-1. The Irish lost game three 3-2 in Lucan on Sunday and game two6- 1 in Wellesley on Friday. Lucan started the series with a 5-2 win at home on April 7. Bukala is disappointed in the play of his older players. "Our veteran players have to step up their games and play like the veterans they are," he said. Wellesley has scored only one even strength goal in the three games, a stat that underlines Lucan's need to play more disciplined.. "If we aren't more dis- ciplined we will lose the series," Bukala said. "It's as simple as that." Lucan's Marc Williams replaced Mike Boyce in goal midway through game two and started game three. "The highlight of the past two games has been Marc Williams," Bukala said. See IRISH page 23 Upended. Lucan won 5-2 but have dropped the last two games to Wellesley and trail 2-1 in the series. Jodi Truemner scored three tries for the Panthers while Missy Hayter added two and Brittney Caldwell, Tracy Wilson, Hillary Hardeman and Kim Keller all added single tries. All three Panther rugby teams host Wingham F.E. Madill tomorrow (Thursday), the girls start- ing at 1 p.m., the junior boys at 2 p.m. and the seniors at 3 p.m. The boys soccer season started Monday with South Huron travelling to Central Huron. The senior Panthers won 3-1. Chad Monteith, Brandon Martin and Dan Snell scored for South Huron. The junior Panthers won 7-0. Jason Smith scored three goals while Andrew Prout and Darren Marziali scored two each. Tom Phouttharath earned the shutout. Both Panther boys soc- cer teams host Madill today (Wednesday) at Canners Field, the seniors at 2 p.m. and the juniors at 3:30 p.m. A junior boys tourna- ment is tentatively sched- uled for April 26 and a senior boys tourney Is ten- tatively set for April 28. The tourneys are one way for Huron teams to fit in more games this season. The Huron soccer season was shortened this year due to principals' concerns over missed school time by players, though South Huron senior boys coach George McEwan said that may change. The Panther girls soccer season begins at Madill April 20. <}j,.'CY..i;yj?;;::?:i4.'r%•. siva' :i: }..: Roughing it.
