TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Organizers lived up to the International Plowing Match slogan "Huron Shines in '99" with an exceptional quilt show and competition at the South Huron Recreation Centre in -Exeter. More than 2,000 visitors from throughout southern Ontario attended the event last Thursday to Sunday. Committee chairperson Dolores Shapton said the committee wanted to put on an excellent quilt show and competition and that it was a "once in a lifetime thing." "Quilting is a form of artistry that hasSHIN grown throughout the years," Shapton„\\11,,� Est said at the awards ceremony Thursday night. Four judges chose winners in nine categories. Cecilia Smith of Fergus ►-+ won the $700. first prize in the Bainton's Old Mill Special with her Corde du Roi quilt made of corduroy `16 which included scenes from Huron County. The Old Mill, Hwy. 4 south of Blyth and Bainton's Old Mill, downtown "IV4L PLS Blyth will own the quilt after the IPM. Shapton said the judges were excellent and "really worked” to choose winners from 104 entries. Diane Carson of Hanover, formerly of Exeter, won the Viewer's Choice award voted on bythe people attend- ing the show. The winning quilts become the property of the quilt committee until the end of the IPM on Sept. 25. Many will be on display at the Huron County Museum in Goderich and at the IPM near Dashwood. Committee Vice -Chairperson Shirley Cooper was in charge of organizing more than 120 volunteers from Women's Institutes, the Lioness Club, United Church Women and Quitter's Guild organizations and individu- als. She said that although there was an organizing committee, many people helped make the show a suc- cess. A "Dashwood girl" Diane Carson, left, of Hanover and formerly of Exeter and Dashwood, won the presti- gious Viewer's Choice Award at the 1999 IPM Quilt Show in Exeter this past weekend. Diane's taupe and navy Celtic Applique quilt was the popular choice by the majority of the 2,000 visitors who attended the show.The win was especially sweet for Diane who is a relative newcomer to quilting, but has lifelong con- nections with the local area and is one of the hundred of volunteers who are helping to organize the International Plowing Match to be held north of Dashwood from September 21-25, 1999.
