Ask Bosanquet for
turning lane support
GRAND BEND — The
Southcott Pines Park As-
sociation wants a turning
lane at the intersection
of Lakeview Ave: and
Hwy. 21. At last Tues
day's meeting, Grand
Bend council reviewed a
letter from Southcott
Pines president Bill-
Shouldice on the matter.
In Shouldice's letter,
he stated association
members have serious
safety concerns with the
area and have proposed
a turning lane as a solu-
tion.
Shouldice stated the
turning lane would re-
duce the risk of rear -end
collisions and dangers to
approaching vehicles
from emergency lane
changes.
The intersection is
within Grand Bend limits
but most of the sub-
division is in Bosanquet.
Coun. Phil Maguire
said the Southcott Pines
should pay for the lane
rather "than expecting
Santa Claus" to fund the
project, adding the res-
idents should go to Bo-
sanquet for support.
Mayor Gam Ivey said
turning lanes are part of
developer costs in a sub-
division. tie said the vil-
lage won't consider the
project if it costs Grand
Bend residents money
when the benefit is to
Bosanquet residents.
Council agreed : the
Southcott Pines residents
should go to Bosanquet
council to get its support.
Council also discussed
the project to install traf-
fic lights at Lake Road
and Hwy. 21.
Provincial officials told
staff the project was not
budgeted for this year
but may happen in 2000.
Support immigrant
doctors
Council wanted to sup-
port a resolution from
the Town of Grimsby re_
garding the shortage of
family physicians in On-
tario but hesitated be-
cause of the wording.
Council disagreed with
the resolution requesting
the province to "take
steps to limit the exodus
of newly educated doc-
tors from the Province".
Deputy -Mayor Bob
Mann said the wording
was "unfortunate."
"What are we going to
do? Build a Berlin
Wall?" he asked.
Council agreed the
province needs to make
Ontario "more at-
tractive" so doctors will
want to stay.
It supported the second
part of the resolution
which called for the
province to "recognize
the human resources
available among im-
migrant doctors."
The Grimsby letter was
referred to the medical
committee for its input.
Concerns about pig
barns
Coun. Shirley Andraza
said she attended . a
meeting of Grand Bend
citizens concerned
about large pig barns op-
erating near the village
limits. She said . another
meeting was scheduled
for Tuesday night.
Much of the concern
stems from the smell and
the impact it will have on
tourism.
"There is a great deal
of concern," Andraza
told council. "The smell
is atrocious."
