Jason Smith scored Lucan's second goal from Mark Phillips at 16:27. Port scored their first goal mid -way through the period. Lucan's Corey Smith restored his team's two goal lead a minute and a half later from Mike Davis and Phillips. The Lakers crept to within a goal with ,8:40 remaining in the first period. The score remained 3-2 till Lucan's Justin Mulligan scored an unas- sisted goal at 15:27 of the second period. Port again made the game too close for com- fort forthe strong Lucan contingent of fans by scoring while shorthand- ed at 13:57 of the second. The Irish hung on through the third period for the win. Mulligan was handed a slashing minor penalty with 7:39 left in the game but his teammates managed to kill Port's powerplay. The Lakers got on the board first by scoring while shorthanded just 1:03 into the game.. Henderson tied the game by scoring seven minutes later from Chad Lambourn and Jur'son. Port took a 2-1 lead by scoring 7:52 into the. sec- ond period but Judson tied the game by scoring less than a minute later from Mike Jaremchenko. Assists went to Kevin Dunbar '(2), Hardick, Roy Davis and Smith. Irish co -coach Jason Bukala said Port put up a good fight but couldn't ultl`Inately measure up to Lucan. "Our depth of our line- up prevailed," he said. Bukala credited the strong between the pipes play of Boyce since round one versus Exeter. Co -coach Bill Bourne said Port played well in the third period of Saturday's game but couldn't find the Irish solution. "Our top players played better than their top play- ers," he said. "We shut them down pretty well." Bourne said Corey Smith's play throughout the series was a key ingredient to Port's demise. Smith shadowed the top Lakers and will be expected to repelt the feat versus the defending all -Ontario champions, the Wellesley Applejackss. in the Jr. D final series. Wellesley have been scouting Lucan during the last couple of games since they swept Hagersville four games straight in the McConnell Conference final series. "We're going in blind," Bourne said. "It'll be a challenge. Hopefully our top players will come through." Bukala said Wellesley resembles Mitchell, who the Irish polished off in four straight games in round two. Wellesley led Missed me. Lucan Irish captain and defenceman Mike Jaremchenko slips past a check from Port Stanley Lakers forward Ron Fish during last week's game five of theirYeck Conference final playoff series at Lucan Arena. Lucan won 5-3 and won game six at Port Stanley 4-3 on Saturday to clinch. the league for the least goals allowed. Bukala said the series is likely to be a battle between Lucan's potent offence and Wellesley's frugal defence. "We're going to force them to play our style of up tempo hockey," Bukala said. The Irish are relatively healthy heading into the championship final. Captain Jaremchenko is still playing with a sore ankle but is putting in his regular shifts. Lambourn played the last two games after sit- ting out while recovering from a separated shoul- der. Henderson didn't finish the last game due to an ankle injury and is listed questionable to start the next game. Wheatley ends the Irish injured list with a sore hip but is expected to play.
