Small Talk - a preschool speech and language phone line
STRATFORD - Speech and language problems are the
most common handicap facing our children. One in ten
preschool children have speech and language problems.
Research shows that left untreated, these children are
t high risk of lifelong problems including poor achieve -
went in school and increased school drop -out -rate
among other problems which are costly to society.
Speech and language problems are more common than
we realize. Early identification and early treatment
makes all the difference. Even young children - under
two years old - can be helped with speech and Language
development. It is often hard for parents to know if their
child has a speech and language problem. They should
trust their instincts and call Small Talk if they think
their baby or child is not learning to talk well.
A Huron -Perth preschool speech and language phone
line was set up on January 19. Parents from Huron and
Perth counties can call to ask questions about how their
Mr- preschooler talks, or how they can help their child
develop strong speech and language skills. The line also
allows parents and those who provide services to chil-
dren such as doctors, early childhood educators, coun-
sellors, etc. to refer a child to a Speech Language
Pathologist for assessment. The number to call is 273-
2222 or 1-800-269-3683 and ask for Small Talk. •
"The Small Talk program is all about making sure that.
all preschool children are given the best chance of
reaching their full speech and language potential,"
•
explains Heather Kane, Public Health Nurse working
with the Speech and Language Initiative. The program
focuses on prevention, finding children with problems
early and making sure they get treatment quickly. Small
Talk is working together with parents, providers of ser-
vice to young children, speech language pathologists
and other professionals to bring about the changes nec-
essary to improve existing speech and language ser-
vices. The program will build on existing resources and
integrate with existing. programs and services as much
as possible.
Small Talk is part of a province -wide initiative
designed to improve preschool speech and language
services. "This has come about as a result of an inten-
sive Huron and Perth community planning process,"
says Mary Louise Laberge, Speech Language Pathologist
working with the Initiative. Huron and Perth communi-
ty agencies and parents, together with a partnership
between the Stratford General Hospital, Perth District
Health Unit and Community Care Access Centre Perth
County, provides direction to the development, support
and delivery of this program with funding from the
provincial government. Small Talk is free and available
:_to all preschool children living in Huron and Perth
counties. For more information or to refer a child to a
Speech Language Pathologist, call 273-2222 or 1-800-
269-3683 and ask for Small Talk.

Clarification
EXETER — Exeter tax-
payers won't receive any
savings from council
choosing a town -only OPP
police service ,quote
rather than a county -wide
quote.
Last week the Times -
Advocate incorrectly
reported Exeter would
receive $32,767 in`sav-
ings if council went with a
town -only OPP service
quote.
The $32,767 reflects
administrative costs that
would be added to the
town -only quote while the
county -wide quote for
Exeter would not include
the above figure.
The Times -Advocate
regrets any confusion this
may have caused.
