(photo/Kate Monk) Irish up 2-1 in conference final By Craig Bradford 'TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Jr. D Irish may be up in their Yeck Conference final series two games to one versus the Port Stanley Lakers but the tables could have been just as easily turned. The Irish won game one 7-3 at home on March 24. Lucan built a 5-0 lead by keeping Port scoreless till Just. less than six minutes into the third. The teams then exchanged goals with Lucan's Mark Phillips scoring the final goal. with 1:45 left in the game from Justin Mulligan and Kevin Dunbar. Other Lucan goals were scored by Dunbar and Mulligan (both with a pair), Mike Jaremchenko and Scott Wheatley. Assists went to Matt a. The game was a penal- ty -filled affair with over 65 penalty minutes, the bulk of which went to the Irish. Lucan gave up two powerplay goals and scored one with the extra man themselves. Mulligan scored the powerplay goal and a shorthanded goal. Port Stanley pulled its starting goaltender, Jason Allison, and went with backu; Jeff Lucario for the third period. The Lakers powerplay almost killed Lucan dur- ing Friday's game in Port. Although Lucan held onto the lead for a 5-4 win, all of Port's goals were scored with the extra man. Lucan built • a 3-1 lead in the first and was up 5-3 after the second Period. Dunbar scored the win- ner at 15:31 of the second period from Mulligan. Other .Irish goals came from Jaremchenko, Judson (shorthanded), Jason Amey and Hardlck (powerplay) with assists by Mulligan, Dunbar and Chad Greenlee. Lucan lost game three 5-4 at home. Lucan Minor Hockey is basking in the glow of three Ontario Minor Hockey Association cham- pionships that were won on the weekend. The Lucan Bantam `DD' team defeated Mariposa 3-2 at Little Britain. Trevor Smith notched Lucan's first goal assisted by Alex Michaelis to give Lucan a 1-0 lead after the first period. Mariposa tied the game in the second period to set the stage for an exciting third frame. Lucan's, Jason Smith scored his team's second goal from Trevor Smith. Mike Pletch scored the winner from Dan Pletch and Trevor Smith. Mariposa scored with eight minutes left but Lucan held on for the win. The OMHA win makes It two in a row for the Lucan Bantams. Coach Roy VanKasteren said this year's team was more balanced than last year's which relied on a couple finesse players to carry them. The Lucan `DD' Atoms swept Tweed with a 7-0 road win Friday. Tyson DeJong, Jeff Silver and Bailey VanPraet each had two goals and Michael Noyes scored one. Assists were earned by Chris VanKasteren (3), Sean Davidson (2) and Noyes. Cam Dawson earned the shutout in net for Lucan. The Lucan Atoms also swept their Shamrock League 'A' Division final series over St. Thomas with a 2-1 win last week. DeJong and Silver scored with Noyes, DeJong and Brad Funston with the assists. The Lucan Atom A/Es wrapped up Lucan's fourth all -Ontario title this season with a 3-2 game five win at home Saturday. Thomas Carmichael scored two of Lucan's goals and Scott Thompson added a single. Assists were earned by Andrew Crowley, Matt Versteeg' and Jeff Latta. Korey Hec backstopped the win for Lucan despite playing with a cut above his left knee that required eight stitches. "It was a good feeling," Atom A/E trainer Mike Thompson said about the win. "To win it at home was good." The Lucan `DD' Novice Lasers won their all - Ontario series_ over Embro last week. Dropping it right.
