Owner John Lund made the announcement on March 24, explaining that construction is slated to begin on May 15, with the new store planning to open Oct. 15. Lund said Canadian Tire has been planning a new store for Exeter for about four years. The new store will be • located on Thames Road East, beside the valu-mart plaza, a location Lund is pleased with because he said it's a major traffic area in the town. Store manager Ruth Miller said the location fits in well with some of the other big businesses. in that area of, town, such as Do -It Center and Big - '0' The existing location at 456 Main St. is simply too small, Lund said, and no longer meets the needs of the community. The new store will feature 17,000 sq. ft. in retail' space, more than three times the retail size of the existing is store, where Canadian Tire has been since 1983. The result of the bigger store will be a larger line of products, wider selec- tion and wider aisles that will be wheelchair -acces- sible. "It will be a much more convenient placeto shop," Lund said. The move to the bigger store will mean the staff of 22 will probably increase to 40. Lund said the employees areexcited about the move. He said he hopes the town will support the new venture, saying Canadian Tire's $5 million invest- ment into the project rep- resents one of the biggest projects in the town's recent history. "We're all excited," he said. "It's been a long process." Lund doesn't know what will happen to the exist- ing Canadian Tire loca- tion, which is owned by Canba Investment of Toronto. Miller said Canadian Tire will still be maintain- ing the Main Street loca- tion until the out in two years. It will take three to five lease runs months for Canadian Tire to gradually move into the new store. Lucan Biddulph council applies for restructuring gran LUCAN BIDDULPH — Council should find out this week if it will be get- ting assistance from the province's municipal restructuring fund. The plan, which helps municipalities who have amalgamated, assists with one-time amalgama- tion costs. Township administrator Ron Reymer said the township has applied for $972,000 to cover amal- gamation expenses, most of which were termina- tion costs for three employees of the former Lucan and Biddulph municipalities. Another portion of the applied funding goes to a proposed modification of the Lucan Biddulph town- ship office, where the council chambers needs to be expanded. Reymer said if the gov- ernment approves the application, the township is eligible for 75 per cent of the approved expenses. He added there was little chance of getting approved for the whole $972,000.
