The municipality has been selected for a na- tional project called New Rural Economy: Options and Choices. The program began last year and identified 32 sites across Canada to gather data on ru- ral Canada. The Uni- versity of Guelph will be handling the re- search in southern Ontario, where Us - borne . was one of only chosen. While the 32 sites have been chosen, ac- cording to Ellen Wall, a research scientist with the University of Guelph, the actual micro analysis of. the sites probably • won't begin until May 1. And while Usborne has been chosen as a site, it won't necessarily be involved in all of the studies, which are being done by University of Guelph professors and students. A recent study on vol- untary organizations, for example, was one study which wasn't done in Us - borne. The exact projects Us - borne will be used for haven't been determined yet, Wall said, although some of the aspects be- ing examined are rural schooling, the labour market and the rural economy. So far, . New Rural Economy research has dis- covered the fol- lowing strengths in Us- borne's fa- vour: its closeness to London, Lake Huron and tourist attractions; its strong sense of com- munity; a climate al- lowing good crops; the area's public schools; and a strong work ethic. The 1996 census shows Usborne's un- employment rate at less than four per cent, which Usborne clerk - treasurer Sandra Strang says is.- because Usborne is a farming community. . Cha11e`inges for the township include amal- "We want something that we can put into action." - SANDRA STRANG, USBORNE CLERK -TREASURER four sites gamation, maintaining medical care, main- taining community spirit and the challenge of making a living on the land. According to Strang, the township is hopeful that the study will im- prove the area and pro- mote Usborne's econ- omy. The township also wants some concrete re- sults. "We want something that we can put into ac- tion," she said. Strang, who is acting as the key contact for the researchers, said she would like to see the study enhance farm op- erations through new and innovative ideas for livestock, field crop and land use. Wall agreed that the, study must" benefit the 32 municipalities. For the township's part, it is supporting the study, although the final agreement won't be fi- nalized until an April 14 meeting in Guelph. The township has agreed to. allow the researchers to use its office space at the municipal office if nec- essary. Wall said the pr©?e"t originally was ; intenned to last five years, but may continue beyond that.
