Hay Swamp forestry
tour runs this Saturday
EXETER - The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority has thinned
out some conifer plantations in Hay
Swamp and would like to show the
public what has been done.
The public is invited to a forest man-
agement information tour on
Saturday. The tour and presentation
will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30
p.m. Follow the signs to the ABCA
plantation located along Huron Rd 83,
approximately four miles west of
Exeter.
Dress appropriately for walking
through the plantation with ABCA
Forestry Technician, Steve Harburn.
This tour will be a benefit to munici-
pal councils and private landowners
who can learn from the efforts of the
conservation authority and gain the
expertise needed when considering
management and harvesting of their
own woodlots. Call the ABCA at 235-
2610 for more detailed information.
The thinning operation has included
removing the fourth row of pine and
spruce trees.
"This approach to forest manage-
ment for conifer plantations will
improve the health of the plantation,
develop and improve the' quality of
wood products, and promote and pro-
tect regeneration of native hardwood
tree species," Harburn said.
In January, a state-of-the-art
mechanical tree harvester and
processor owned and operated by
Harold Piggott Enterprises of
Woodstock has been doing the thin-
ning operation on conservation lands
in Hay Swamp.
For 50 years the ABCA has worked
with landowners in offering education
and encouragement in reforestation
throughout the watershed. The ABCA
has planted trees on many of its own
properties as well, in cooperation
with the Ministry of Natural
Resources. These plantations were
managed by the MNR until recently
when because -of financial cutbacks,
the agreements for management were
turned over to the conservation
authorities.
