Lucan Jr. D Irish sweep Mitchell Hawks four strai
By Craig Bradford
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan Jr.
D Irish hockey team
brought their brooms to
Mitchell Monday to sweep
the Mitchell Hawks out of
the playoffs.
Lucan won 3-1 to sweep
the best four of seven
series four games to
none.
The Irish dominated the
first two periods outshoot-
ing Mitchell 30-9. Mitchell
came on in the thira with
16shots compared with
Lucan's five, but the
Hawks only managed a
single goal scored with
only 20 seconds left to
ruin Lucan goaltender
Mike Boyce's shutout bid:
Irish co -coach Bill
Bourne said many of
Mitchell's third period
shots were from the
perimeter.
Chad Greenlee scored
Lucan's first goal on the
powerplay with 1:05 left.
in the first period from
Kevin Dunbar and Justin
Mulligan.
Neil Judson gave Lucan
a 2-0 lead 6:26 into the
second period with the
assist going to Greenlee.
Derek Graansma made
it 3-0 by scoring on the
powerplay from Corey
Smith and Greenlee 1:14
into the third period.
"It was a good solid
effort," Bourne said.
Lucan should.have a
week off before the next
series versus either
Belmont or Port Stanley.
That series stands at 2-1
for Belmont.
The Irish started the
series in dramatic fashion
with a 3-2 home win in
double overtime March
10. Neal Costello scored
Celebration time. Lucan Irish players Corey Smith
(##9), Mark Phillips, Mike Davis and Justin Mulligan
celebate after Davis scored Lucas's second goal dur-
ing Saturday's game at Lucan Arena. Lucan went on to
win 3-1 and won at Mitchell 3-1 Monday night to
sweep the series.
the winning unassisted
goal 3:07 into the second
extra frame. Mulligan
scored Lucan's first two
goals, the first with 5:49
into the game assisted by
Mark Phillips and Mike
Davis, the second short-
handed at 9:20 of the first
period assisted by
Dunbar and Smith.,
Mitchell scored on the
powerplay at 7:39 of the
first period and tied the
game 52 seconds into the
second period.
Lucan won game two in
Mitchell 5-2 on Friday.
Mulligan gave Lucan the
lead they would never
relinquish with 5:11 gone
in the first period from
Mike Jaremchenko.
Phillips scored an unas-
sisted shorthanded goal
less than four minutes.
into the second period to
give Lucan a 2-0 lead.
Mitchell scored on the
powerplay mid -way
through the second peri-
od but Greenlee scored
just 21 seconds later from
Greg Henderson and
Jason Amey to restore the
two goal lead.
Bourne said Greenlee's
goal was the turning point
in the game.
Mitchell crept to within
a goal by scoring 1:17
into the third period, but
couldn't get one past
Boyce the rest of the way.
Phillips scored mid -way
through the third period
from Mulligan and Smith
and Neil Judson scored
the extra insurance goal
from Henderson with
3:13 left.
Lucan won game three
at home 3-1 on Saturday.
Dunbar got the Irish on
the board first while
shorthanded from Scott
Wheatley and Amey mid-
way through the first
period.
Davis gave Lucan a two
goal by scoring another
shorthanded goal with
1:40 left in the period
from Phillips.
Mitchell made it 2-1
near the start of the sec-
ond period but couldn't
solve Boyce for the rest of
the game.
Mulligan erased
Mitchell's hopes of taking
the game to overtime by
scoring with 4:12 left in
the game from Dunbar.
Referee Briant Duncan
handed Lucan a total of
41 penalty minutes and
Mitchell 51 minutes.
Henderson and Mitchell's
Ryan Hoegy dropped the
gloves at near the end of
the second period.
Lucan's penalty killing
killed Mitchell. The Irish
scored four shorthanded
goals while Mitchell man-
aged just two powerplay
goals with many chances.
One concern for Lucan
is .its own powerplay that
didn't click till game four.
Boyce was solid in net
for Lucan in all- four
games. He gave up six
goals during the entire
series while making over
30 saves in the first three
games.
Bourne said his players
will have to work on their
discipline since they often
lost their cool during the
Mitchell series.
Chad Lambourn is still
on the injured list with a
separated shoulder but is
expected back for the
next, ` series. Both
Jaremchenko and
Costello have been play-
ing with sore ankles as
well. The week off
between series should
help all three players.
t
Bourne prefers an Irish
vs. Port match -up in the
next series. Lucan won
the season series vs. the
Lakers 3-1 and evened
Belmont 2-2.
On top of being a talent-
ed team.. Bourne said the
Bombers have a huge
home ice advantage since
their barn is so small and
their skaters are so quick.
