Benu with Alex Changes and news from South Huron Hospital . Sy Dr. Doug Hoover CHAIR, HURON -PERTH HOSPITALS In my first letter of the year I stated that 1999 would certainly be a year of positive change. It is my intention, at least on a monthly basis, to try and keep our community aware of these changes at South Huron Hospital, and to provide newsworthy items. I have several good news stories to share with youthis month. On February 1, Janice Cosgrove became our new Administrator. Janice brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge to the Huron Perth Hospital Partnership, and besides several other duties, she has been given the task of providing Administrative support to our- selves, Alexandria Marine in Goderich and Clinton. Janice is an excellent fit for our community, and will serve us well. She encourages your input, and is eager to meet people like you and me, to make our hospital a vibrant part of our community. After many months of discussion, the Board of South Huron Hospital has signed a letter of intent with ANAGO and the Adult Day Away program to use space for their activities within our hospital. The Board strongly recognizes the need to provide such services to our community and welcomes these new "partners" in health care. Hopefully, renovations in the east wing of the basement will soon be started. These are very important programs and at long last we're pleased to announce genuine progress in this area. As most people are aware, our catchment area, and to be quite frank, all of Southwest Ontario, presently finds itself faced with a frightening short- age of Doctors. We are not alone, and many commu- nities find themselves struggling. For example, Dr. Jim Rouke of the Southwestern Ontario Rural Medicine, Education, Research and Development Unit (SWORM), states that Kitchener requires 50 General Practitioners, the Niagara region; 94! Therefore, not only must we actively recruit doctors, but we also need to retain the ones we have. Hopefully our recent approval as being an underser= viced area will help, as we are given more exposure, but it will not guarantee new Doctors. We need to have a Medical Arts facility wherein present and new Physicians can practise and not be faced with the inherent headaches of running a small business. Input from our local Doctors, and numerous studies has shown that this is the single most effective tool in trying to recruit new Physicians. At the end of February, George Marr was asked to vacate office space in the Professional Building to start this process. Dr. Linda Steele has asked to occupy this area, and has been approved for a one year term. In the interim, Dr. Hodder has offered space within his office for a new Doctor, and other arrangements may be made. Our community needs to have a facili- ty readily available, as we continue to throw our caps into the recruitment ring. The development of a mul- tiperson medical clinic will take time, and we need to have interim space available as soon as possible. The Board of Governors of South Huron Hospital would like to extend the opportunity, through Janice Cosgrove to any local individuals or groups to further develop the concept of a local Medical Arts facility. It is understood that this may involve the Professional building across the street from the Hospital. It is only through a community effort, not the Hospital's alone will this.come to fruition. - The Board of Governors consists of the following active members. Although Janice- Cosgrove, and myself, the Chair, have been given the task of provid- ing liaison with our community, all the following would certainly welcome your comments. Please feel free to contact them with. your concerns, or visit our new meeting on March 30 at 7:30 in the Board Room of the Hospital.
