Bowling for Millions Area women attend World Day of
Usborne Twp. Coun. Brian Hardeman gives it his best
shot in Sunday's Celebrity Bowlathon at the Zurich
Bowling Lanes. Sunday's event raised $4,253 for South
Huron F3ig Brothers/Big Sisters.

February has been a very busy month for.McGillivray
Central.
Fine examples of McGillivray students' achievements
were recently noted in the Legion Poster and Essay
contest. Heather Irvine received 2nd for her essay
"Remembering the War", Andrew Appleton received
3rd for his poem "A Soldier's Grim Story" and Shelby
Vandenheuvel placed 3rd for her colour poster.
Also, congratulations to Angie Ritchie, Ashley
McAlpine and Travis O'Neil (Team Mustang) and
Richard Usselman and Andrew Appleton (Team
Hydrotron), who placed 2nd in two divisions in the
1998 Cyber Science Challenge. Both teams competed
against schools throughout the Thames Valley District
School Board to answer multiple choice and essay
questions posted on the Internet. All questions were
based on the new Science curriculum.
Many of the students have proceeded to the next level
in public speaking contests. Of the four schools . repre-
senting the Middlesex Area contest, only two contes-
tants in ali advance to the County Effective Speaking
contest, both students were from McGillivray.
Congratulations to Nicole Vanderhoek (who spoke on
horse whispering) and Heather Irvine (who spoke on
Anne Frank) as they were selected to compete on
March 30 at 7 p.m. at North Meadows School in
Strathroy..
Saturday February 20, 17 McGillivray students took
part in the Ailsa Craig Legion contest. Top three prizes
were awarded in each of the Primary, Junior and
Intermediate divisions, McGillivray claimed eight of
those places. These were as follows: primary division,
Travis Mollard (3rd), Katelyn Vdnderhoek (2nd), and
Elyse Trevithick (1st); in the junior division, Sarah
Irvine (3rd), Josh Hodgins (2nd), and Nocole
Vanderhoek (1st); and in the intermediate division,
Katie Chiasson and Steven Som�r�erville (tied for 3rd)
and Heather Irvine (lst). First plate winners will again
compete on March 6. Congratulations to all speakers
for taking on this challenge.
The student council did •a fine job of organizing a "3
on 3" basketball tournament on February 6. The time
was put into organizing and running this event by
Laura- Rollings, Kelly Twynstra, Andrew Appleton,
• Carrie Dixon, Melissa Mulder, Brandon Morley, Katie
Chiasson and Mr. Robertson are greatly appreciated.
Feb. 16, Mr. Robertson and Mr. Roden organized and
grilled pancakes over the noon hour for the students.
Thanks to them and the grade 8's who helped serve
the students!
The basketball season is coming to an end, and both
the boys' and girls' on the McGillivray school teams are
to be commented for their hard work at practices and
game. Ms. Blauuboer and Mr. Howarth are both
pleased with the improvement in skills, and the posi-
tive attitude displayed by team members throughout
the season. Boys' team members include Martin
Cornelissen, Andrew Appleton, Brandon McLeod,
Robbie Yea, Ryan Pullman, Billy Thomson, Lee Richie,
Chris McNeil, and K.J. Robinson. Members of the girls'
team include Jennifer Mawson, Dawn Slater, Melissa
Mulder, Michelle Trevinthick, Laura Rollings, Katie
Chiasson, Josie Thomson, Kayla Lagerwerf, Michele
Parkinson, Mary Jo Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell and
Carrie Dixon.

THAMES ROAD - Rev. Marilyn
Carter conducted the third Sunday
In Lent church service on Sunday
morning at Elimville.
John Miner spoke about the
church council and Rev. Carter led
in the call to worship. Evelyn Johns
helped light the Christ Candle. Rev.
Carter told the youth a story about
Nicodemus.
The choir sang "At Calvary"
accompanied by pianist Marilyn
Vandenbussche. Shirley Cooper
read the scriptures lessons.
The title of Rev. Carter's sermon
was "In the happy and sad time,
praise God."
The minute for mission "Agents of
Change" was read by Janis
Richardson. Bruce Delbridge was
the greeter. Janet Coward and
Dorothy Webber received the offer-
ing and Barry Miller collected items
for the Food Bank.

On March 11 the Sunbeams will
meet at Thar:.!:. Road Church from
.9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
On March 11 the Senior Youth
Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. at
Thames Road. Members are to
bring a tooiie.
On March 14 the choir will be
hosting a pancake and sausage
brunch after the church service.
On March 21 .the Christian
Education Committee invites every-
one to a day in the sugar bush at
John and Marilyn Pym's. If interest-
ed, sign the sheet no later than next
Sunday.
On March 26 there will be an
"Evening Harmony" with harpist
Edward Klassen and local talent at
Kirkton United Church at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5, with elementary
and preschool children free. Lunch
will be provided.
On March 31 a "Once in a Blue
Moon" appreciation banquet will be
held for adults. Everyone is wel-
come and tickets are $5.00.
Anyone interested in the job of
cutting the grass at Elimville ceme-
tery and around the church should
contact Gerald Johns as soon as
possible.
On March 21 the Youth Class will
be taking part in the church ser-
vice.
World Day of Prayer
About 75 women from Exeter
area churches met with Elimville
and Thames Road. women at
Thames Road for the World Day of
Prayer service On Friday. The
theme was "God's Tender Touch".
This year's service was written by
the women of Venezuela's World
Day of Prayer Committee.
Vice president Judith Parker wel-
comed everyone. Marjorie Johns
was the organist for the singing of
the hymns. Women from the differ-
ent churches took part in the ser-
vice.

solos accorfrpanied by the pianist
Marjorie Johns. Grace Pym intro-
duced guest speaker Shirley Dawe.

`SAINTSBURY - Saturday evening
a surprise birthday party was held
for Hazel Davis at St. Patricks
marking her 39+ birthday. The'
Parish Hall was decorated for the
occasion.
Evening Prayer was held by Rose
Cunningham assisted by Margaret
Carroll reading the scriptures.
Cunningham gave the message and
also presented Good News Bibles to
church servers Courtney
MacGillivray, Crystal Davis and
Katie -Scarlett MacGillivray gifts
from the Cunninghams. Childrens
focus was given by Hazel Davis.

The Rev. Stanley Jay will be at St.
Patricks to celebrate the Holy
Eucharist 3rd Sunday in Lent.
Everyone was invited to the parish
hall for refreshments. Guests along
with congregation included Joyce
and Ralph Simpson, Audrey
McFalls with family David, Darin,
Don, Brenda, Ben, Nick and Matt
McFalls.
Davis thanked everyone for com-
ing and making her birthday so
special. Happy birthday wishes
were also enjoyed by Travis and
Starr Davis who were celebrating
their birthdays on Sunday. Thanks
also to Heather Hirtzel for the
birthday banner and to Allan
Cunningham for the lawn sign.
The Davis's enjoyed family get
togethers earlier in the week cele-
brating Hazel's, Travis and Starr's
birthdays and Michael and
Suzanne's anniversary.

friend Mitch Hully for a sleepover
Saturday. Sunday the Davis'
attended service at_Christ Anglican
Church in London at 11 a.m. hon-
ouring The Rev. Greg Smith on the
20th anniversary of his ordination.
Hugh Davis and Margaret Carroll
were warden at St. Patricks during
the time Rev. Smith was rector in
the Parish of Kirkton, St. Patricks
and Granton. A surprise reception
followed.
Sunday evening Ralph, Joyce and
Darren Simpson visited the Davis's
to honour Hazel's birthday:

Pot and bomb threat
at Medway High
ARVA — A false bomb threat at Medway High School
proved to be bad news for four students.
While staff were investigating the false threat at
about 9 a.m. on March 3, four students were found
smoking marijuana. One student received a five day
suspension while the other three were expelled since
this was their second time getting caught smoking
dope.
No criminal charges were laid.

HENSALL -- Some hand and power tools were stolen
from a servicetruck at W.G. Thompson & Sons Ltd. in
Hensall on March 1.
London OPP Const. Myra Rusk said thieves gained
entry by smashing the passenger window. The tools
have the initials WGT engraved on them.
