Exeter advances.
Panther wrestling wraps successful first year back
EXETER — Wrestling is
alive and well at South
Huron District High
School.
The Panther wrestling
team, coached by Dave
Wright, recently finished
their first season back
after an over 20 year hia-
tus with the WOSSA
meet.
Brian Evans fought to
fourth place in the tour-
nament for SHDHS's top
finish at WOSSA.
Other wrestlers that
fought at WOSSA includ-
ed Bryan Gielen, Brian
Harrigan, Brad Harrigan,
Darryl Weiss, Josh
Heywood, Luke Shantz,
Andrew Kinsmen, Adam
Cyr, Leigh Holdsworth,
Cal deLange, Ryan Groot
and Bram Steele.
Although no SHDHS
wrestler qualified for last
week's OFSAA tourna-
ment in London, the
team's first season back
wasn't a disappointment.
The Panthers picked up a
season high 16 medals
and second place at the
prestigious Guelph tour-
nament and SHDHS
wrestlers earned many
medals at several other
meets in both male and
female categories.
The SHDHS wrestling
coaching staff hopes to
build upon this season's
success with their novice
wrestlers. The ultimate
goal is to bring Panther
wrestling on par with the
glory days of the '70s
when coaches Hon
Bogart and Doug Ellison
had successful teams.
Wrestling was so popu-
lar in the Exeter area
during its heyday that
programs were started in
SHDHS's elementary
feeder schools with an
elementary tournament
at SHDHS to cap the sea-
son.
