Times-Advocate, 1999-03-10, Page 6Exeter Times -Advocate In the News -- -------- Exploratory oil and gas wells drilled in local townships By Kate Monk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF MCGILLIVRAY TWP. - Is there oil and gas in McGillivray and Stephen Townships? In late February, crews from Key Energy Drilling of Corunna were drilling a test well on the farm of Vince and Marilyn Thompson west of Mt. Carmel but well site su- pervisor Ernie Natte said it's too early to say how well the oil and gas ex- ploration project is go- ing. Natte said Daybreak Energy Corp. of Calgary completed seismic test- ing last summer and drilling two exploratory wells in Stephen and McGillivray ' Townships are the next stage. The Stephen well on Mollard Line near Grand Bend was completed earlier in February. Key Energy works around the clock, seven days a week with three crews of four people. The rig manager, geol- ogist and well site super- visor stay on site but the crews stay in local mo- tels or commute from the Corunna area. Each exploratory well takes a week to ten days to complete. Natte estimated they would be at the Thomp- son farm until the end of last week where they drilled to a depth of about 600 metres. "It's a pretty shallow well as far as oil and gas goes," Natte said. He explained the ex- ploratory wells are nec- essary because the area doesn't have an es- tablished oil field. After this crew leaves, a smaller rig will be brought in to put the well into production if it's a "producing" well, he explained. If not, the well is plugged. Natte said the project "generates a fair bit of income for the local area." Local companies pro- vide the water used for drilling and build the ac- cess road. As well, local restaurants and ac- commodations benefit from the crew's patron- age. Daybreak leases the site and access road from the landowner who gets a percentage of the recovery if it's a good well, Natte said. Elliot's Land Services of Grand Bend has been hired by Daybreak to talk with the land- owners. The Huron County Fed- eration f Agriculture is holding' public meeting tonight at 8 p.m. to help landowners find out about the fine lines be- tween the lines of lease agreements. Topics will include in- definite lease extensions, abandonment, com- pensation, drainage, de- fault, dispute resolution and facilities' location. The meeting will be held at the Goderich Wednesday, March 10, 1999 Twp. Community Centre in Holmesville. Key Energy Drilling crews drill an exploratory well in McGillivray Twp. last week. The contract is worth $30,000 with ad- ditional time beyond the 270 hours charged at $100 per hour. This will be a five-year contract from the date of signing. Council received one other dredging proposal from G. Heard Construc- tion Co. which would see material dredged once or twice a year using the suction method and de - posited on the south beach. Council estimated the Heard bid would cost considerably more than the Turnbull proposal. Last year, $40,000 was spent on dredging. Usborne & Hibbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company Exeter, Ont.
