Durrell gets lease transfer for chunk of land in Grand Bend
By Kate Monk
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GRAND BEND -- The
lease for a 25 square foot
chunk of land on the
Ausable River will be
transferred from . Joe
Green, the current owner
of 71 River Rd. to Robert
Durrell who is purchasing
the Grand Bend property.
Durrell appeared before
'village council in Feb.
concerned the lease
would not be automatical-
ly transferred to him
when he buys the proper-
ty.
The land is owned by
the federal government
and leased to the Village
of Grand Bend. The vil-
lage subleases it for the
operation of fishing ves-
sels.
The current owner, Joe
Green, has operated fish-
ing vessels from the 10'
portion of the federally -
owned river frontage In
the past.
The lease expires in
2001.
Council made the deci-
sion at a committee of the
whole meeting on Monday
afternoon and approved it
on Monday night.
1'he lease transfer has
two conditions. No pro-
trusions or projections
are allowed over or into
the water along the north
side of the pro$erty and
"best efforts" are to be
'made to maintain a two -
''foot space at the west end
of the property with noth-
ing to be moored in that
area for safety reasons.
This is to provide
manoeuvring space for
craft on the adjoining
property.
Liquor license public
meeting April 17
Coun. Shirley Andraza
asked for clarification of a
motion made at the Feb.
15 council meeting
regarding a moratorium
on new liquor license
applications.
She wanted it amended
to read the moratorium
applies to new liquor
licenses for an area not
licensed in the past 12
months. This is to avoid a
situation whereby a
license may have lapsed
for a few months between
owners.
Council placed the
moratorium because it is
concerned with the heavy
cost of policing Grand
Bend which is related to
the high number of
licensed establishments in
the area.
The Grand Bend area
has 5,800 licensed spaces
(nearly six times the pop-
ulation) and has policing
costs of . more than
$500,000.
A public meeting will he
held on Sat., April 17 at
the Grand Bend Public
School from 10 a.m. to
noon to discuss the issue
of liquor license applica-
tions.
