Huron District High
School student hit by a
car on March 3 is back at
school.
Ryan. Groot, 17, was
back to his Gr. 11 classes
Monday. Groot was hit by
a white Ford Tempo at
about noon when the car
went over the curb while
travelling east on Gidley
St. and headed towards a
group of four teens Groot
was in. The other three
youths managed to get
out of the way.
Groot was taken to
South Huron Hospital
where he was treated
and released for minor
injuries.
The Tempo driver failed
to remain at the accident
scene and is sought by
the OPP as its investiga-

said.
EXETER — Hay
Township has given a
resounding 'no' to the
Town of South Huron
amalgamation group try-
ing to annex parts of the
township.
The amalgamation
group — consisting of
Exeter and Stephen and
Usborne townships — had
been asking Hay for land
west of Exeter including
the landfill and cemetery
and for the entire police.
Village of Dashwood, now
split down Highway 83
between Stephen and
Hay.
Hay's denial was the
topic of much discussion
at the amalgamation
committee's March 3
meeting.
Stephen Reeve Harvey
Ratz said the township
supports the notion that
Dashwood residents
should decide whether
their village moves
towards the South Huron
group. He said Stephen
would support a public
meeting in Dashwood to
hear the residents' opin-
ions.
The T -A learned
Monday there will be a
public meeting at the
Dashwood Community
Centre on March 25 at
7:30 p.m.
Committee chairman
and Stephen Deputy -
Reeve Tom Tomes said if
Dashwood residents are
in favour of joining the
Town of South Huron, the
group will go ahead with
annexing the land.
If Dashwood doesn't
want to join South Huron,
the group will forget
about annexation.
Exeter Deputy -Reeve
Dave Urlin said he didn't
want to see the amalga-
mation group's draft pro-
posal delayed because of
the annexation issue and
said the group should
proceed without the Hay
land.
Urlin added he isn't
sure what a public meet-
ing can accomplish
because Hay seemingly
won't negotiate.
"It's out of our hands
nova , we feel," he said,
exp. aining that if
Dashwood residents want
to join South Huron,
they'll have to go to Hay
council and fight for what
they want.
Usborne Reeve Robert
Morley supported the
Dashwood public meet-
ing, saying it's only fair
residents get to express
their opinions.
Exeter Mayor Ben
Hoogenboom said he was
concerned about the
Dashwood issue and that
many residents have told
him they want the village
to join South Huron.
"I think it's unfortunate
that politicians don't lis-
ten to the people,"
Hoogenboom said of Hay
council's decision.
The South Huron amal-
gamation group next
meets on March 31 at
7:30 p.m. in the Exeter
council chambers.
EXETER — An anony-
mous letter sent to the T-
A last week questioning
the marking process at
South Huron District High
School has been labelled
as "rubbish" by principal
Deb Homuth.
The letter said a
"prominent" person in
the community appealed
a final OAC mark, result-
ing in the mark being
raised by three per cent.
When contacted by the
T -A, Homuth said there is
no truth at all to that let-
ter," and explained that
while students are
allowed to appeal marks,
it has never happened
while she has been prin-
cipal at SHDHS.
