Watch for this page The children in these schools are our future leaders. the last week of every month. The Times Advocate would like to share with you Zurich Cougar Report The Early Years Bear lass has just finished a friendship unit. We enjoyed learning about being. a nice friend from the `Kids on the Block' video. We have celebratlxl our 50th day at school. Each child brought a collection of 50 items. We then measured and weighed them. We also made a fig book about 50 things. To celebrate Heritage Week, we talked about the Canada flag and our money. Our class made flags and one of our favourite songs is 'Canada In My Pocket' by Michael Mitchell. The Happy Face Early Years Class celebrated her- itage day by taking an imaginary hot air balloon across a map using pictures of Canada. We sang. 'Canada In My Pocket' by Michael Mitchell. Then we made pockets and put symbols of Canada in each. For Heritage week, grade one made a heritage tree and put it up in the hall by our door. Each student was asked to bring in a picture of their parents and grandparents and these were cut and mounted on red construction paper. leaves. We then put the leaves en the branches of the tree we made out of poster paper. We also participated in the question and answer quiz each afternoon. The grade 2/3 class has been participating in Heritage week by taking part in the Canadian Geography Quiz. We have also been studying how our culture is different from cultures around the. world and how it is enriched by immigration. This week's Cougar of the week was Kacie Erb. As part of Heritage Week, Mr. Pearson's grade 3/4 class participated in _the `Canada Quiz' as well as dis- cussed some of Canada's best tourist sites. We have also created paper mache` totem poles and plasticihe sculptures of various Native homes, tools and weapons in our social studies program. Mr. Brock's grade 5/6 class has been: -celebrating and learning about Black. History Monte We- used the internet to learn about the Underground Railroad and the difficult conditions people of colour faced.. As well, we have .been participating in the Heritage Week quizzes. Several students got nearly-- perfect early:perfect on the quiz. Way to go! With Miss Buist we have been learning about the history of citizenship in Canada and the Charter of Rights: We have visited the web site citizen.com, have answered trivia ques- tions, have researched the last 5 decades in Canada, and have discussed what it means to be Canadian. Miss Buist's grade 7 students took part in the in - school trivia contest on Canada Big winners were Byron, Sam and Michelle. We used web site citizen.com to investigate heritage. We are studying New France and New England in history. Students in Mr. Redick's grade eight class have been researching a significant Canadian event or person. They are going to put their findings in a Hyperstudio project that can be accessed on the sys- tem by everyone. Meghan gave a very good speech. on 'The October Crisis' of the Seventies. Right now the students are searching websites for Sixties events in our country. The' girls' basketball team was quite successful atthe regional tournament and placed second. The children have just completed the TVO Movement program in the Virtual Classroom. Everyone enjoyed designing and building their own.• wooden car. Interesting experiments were done with the cars. In Social Studies, Gr. 2/3 is currently finishing up an Inuit study. Excellent projects on various Arctic animals were completed by the students. On the computer, the pupils have- been practicing their proper keyboarding as they type friendship sto- ries. Inuit drawings were done using the "paint" pro- gram. Mr. Snell's grade 4/5 class is inthe middle of doing many things in the virtual classroom like their char- acter boxes and SNOOPS. Miss Smith's grade 5/6 class took a field. trip to Wawanosh Nature Cmare. The event concluded a 'Lost in the Barren's' novel study unit. The students participated in a survival game. Taking on the -role of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores, the students searched for food and water in a wooded area while attempting to stay clear of predators. This was an active day and a good time was had by all. Ms. Smith's class is in the beginning stages of plan- ning a naturalization/garden area for the school. The garden will be developed in- the spring and cared for over the summer. The Green Club also has an inter- est in the project. Usborne's Resource Teacher, Mrs. Hayter is responsible for initiating and planning the entire project. The grade 7 and 8 classes went to Talisman skiing on Feb. 12. Some of the comments heard .were: "Talisman was coal. I had a great time and, I can't wait to go again!", "It was spectacular, jolly good fun!" The grade 7 and 8 classes will also be curling during February and March. One student comment- ed "Curling is exceptionally fun." The pupils appreci- ate being able to use thecurling club in Exeter.: Reporters: .Brenna- Osgood -and -Kristen TTerhoog News From the Hawles Nest in Hensall kJsborne Public School news Usborne School celebrated Valentine's day with a dance, red and white day, candy jar guessing and valentine's messages. There are many events taking place in the month of February such as: "Partners in Excellence" reading program, skating, pizza and hot dog days, free throw competition, public speaking, wacky hair day, cupcake day. sneaker day, Tech 21, air bands, chess club and Saturday morning floor hockey. The Early Years classes have been talking about friendship this month. They have been keeping a journal of all the acts -of kindness throughout the day.They are making friendship necklaces, booklets and cards for each other. The Grade V2 class at Lisburne School have cele- brated Valentine's Day and their. 100th school day this month. On" l00_ daft, they brought'100' objects to school and did math activities with them. The class has been building projectsusing wood rips as- part of the "Structures`" program in the virtual classroom, as well as readiftg books for the read-a-thon to. earn new books for the school. • Mrs. McConnells' grade 2/3 class has been working on a Friendslula theme. The pupils have been trying to do,"random acts of kindness" as part of the school wide program. The Valentine's Day celebration activities and classroom party were enjoyed by all. The staff wishes: to applaud all the students of. 1{ensall Public: School for their fine behavior on the playground during January and, February. The stu- dents have been busy with many forms of outside play such as: sliding down the snow hills, making snow forts, snowmen and snow angels. Well done!! Kindergarten students just recently brought out their beach wear and enjoyed a day at the beach in their classroom. They were seen wearing shorts; tee shirts, sun hats and even sunglasses. They cut open a coconut and tasted it. Yummy?? They always seem to bring sunshine to the hallways. The Grade 1 students have been enjoying their "Super Kid" of the Week -Program. They are work- ing very hard on 'telling time to the hour and half hour. They continue to. work on the number facts and have cornplete.d another new reader,"See a Show". The Grade 2 students have been working on their web page. They were the first class: to publish their work on the website. The studentscencourage you to visit and enjoy their work. They have recently com- pleted their 106th day. at shooL Our Early Language Intervention, Program is up and running, assisting some of our students with their reading skills. Thank you to the volunteers for making this pro- gram a success. The Grade 3 students, have been. following: Jesse's Journey. The students raised, on their own, $'iZO. for Jesse's Journey: The students were sad to hear. about Wiarton Willie: The students keep the school up to date with their display of news on the bulletin: board. The grade 4 students have just recently finished their zoo projects to present to their classmates,. They 'are going to start gymnastics soon in Phys,ed. They have just presented their book talks. The chil- dren also completed the novel "Willy Wonka and.the Chocolate Factory". On Fridays, the students are linked with grade 1 students fhr reading and dimer. activities. "Anne of Green Gables" was read•by grade 5. They have started to take geometry in math, The human, body is their science topic. Choy are using some oh the new phys.ed. equipment in gym as weWas Iearn- ing new basketball skills. Grade 6l7 has also been learning new basketball skills, They have completed newspaper reports on, the ski trip to Talisman. They are working on book • talks and and designing pamphlets in French, The grade 7/8 class has just completed the. novel. "Call of the Wild", had tests in various subjects and continued to record in their journals. They go to Tech 21 monthly. The student's have just started to study the visual novel, 'Tom Gratton's War'. They are working on geometry, line segments and angles in. math. The class curls in Clinton on Thursday afternoons: Students have been ice skating and skiing as well' • as enjoying the twice a month sports/craft nights. Members of the community joined us in a celebra- tion of Pancake Tuesday held at Hensall United Church. Over $2;500: was raised at a skate-a-thon for the playground equipment fund. The Grade 5 class won a pizza party for raising the most money. Jenna. Dayman was one of 16 young hockey play- ars who travelled to Toronto to take part in the clos- ing ceremonies for Maple Leaf Gardens. She carried the banner representing the hockey players from the 1947 era. Stephen Central. Public School From Room 7 - Grades 2/3 have been very busy with the Animal research projects. We began by making jot notes and then writing a paragraph for each heading. We are using the Dreamwriters to produce the final product and having a great time dting it! From Room 5 - Grade 4 students arebusy studying Medieval times. We have also been examining light and sound. From Room 6 - Grade 3. has been discovering two types of forces in Science. One is of a .direct contact like a push or pull. The second is experienced: at a distance such as static, electric or magnetic force. Each force creates movement in objects: Some new vocabulary includes gravity,_ repel, drag, streamlined and friction. Each lesson involves a problem or an investigation which is carried out by partners or small groups. From Room 8 Ikh math, :grade --5 skudtnts, are. studying measurement. In Science we are doing experiments with changes in matter. Also, we are learning about atoms. In Language Arts, we are reading about kites around the world. From Room 3 - Grade 7 students have been,study- ing Antarctica in Geography and using. the Internet for research.. www.icair.iac.org.nzi: Topics have • included ice, southern lights, geographic informa- tion, history, penguins and whales. In F ngllsh. stu• - dents have written an essay on the "Domino Effects of Kindness" as well as completing their novel stud- ies on `Witch of Blackbird Pond' or'Indian. in the Cupboard'. Students have finished presenting their speeches to their classmates and- are now working on Science Fair Projects. We enjoyed Mr. McEwen's visit from South Huron. District High school to help us get ready. From Room 4 _ In math. the grade 6 -students have been studying geometry, perimeter, area and vol- ume.. They have, created interesting skins of solid shapes and tried: their best to name them. It was a challenge to find the surface area and volume of solid shores, "AWorld in Motion" is an •interesting • topic for -our science studies. The students are learn- ing about the kinds of motion and the six simple machines. Sem they will be able to design and: build their own.inventian. Froin Room. Z - Grade 7/8 students have been working- on different kinds of dances in their gym class. Groups have made up their own dances and presented them to the class for everyone to learn. Speech presentations have just wound. up with,threv representatives going to the gym. The class is now focussing on their Science Fair Experiments and Inventions. • From Kindergarten - Kindergarten students have been learning the letters, L,M',N, and.0 and will con- tinue with their letter of the day program.next.week. Mrs. Miller's Room 4: students have been using resources~ to discovers the background behind many objects- we use or see daily. Mrs. Bears& is working. with.
