OPA convention in Goderich
GODERICH - More than
500 delegates and guests
attended the two day
Ontario Plowmen's
Association (OPA) conven-
tion in Goderich on
February 21-23.
The OPA held its 89th
annual meeting in the
host county for this year's
International Plowing
Match (IPM) which will be
held near Dashwood from
September 21-25.
The OPA is the organiz-
ing body for the annual
plowing match which as
London Mayor Dianne
Haskett told the audience,
"is a showcase event that
has gained an interna-
tional reputation."
Mayor Haskett was
among the contingency
from Middlesex County
, who successfully won the
bid to host the IPM in
2002. The event will be
held on the outskirts of
Glencoe at the McDonald
Farm.
Representatives from
other future plowing
matches were also pre-
sent including
Wellington County in
2000 and Ottawa -
Carleton in 2001.
Huron County, host of
the 1999 IPM, held the
evening banquet on
February 22nd and
unveiled the poster which
will be used to promote
this year's match.
The poster includes a
photograph taken by
Daniel Holm of Hensall,
which depicts the black
silhouette of a farmer
working in the hayfield
against a dark purple and
white light background.
The poster is both dra-
matic and different,

Craig, is just what the
Huron group was aiming
for.
Organizers of the
Huron match reported
that plans are well under
way to host this year's
event, with pre -purchase
ticket sales going well and
more than 400 sites in the
trailer park already
booked for the week's
accommodations.
Exhibitor space at the
match is also booking up
quickly.
The IPM will be held on
2,700 acres (1,093
hectares) just north of
Dashwood on the Becker
farm, as well as 20 sur-
rounding farms.
Huron Reeve Carol
Mitchell brought greet-
ings to the OPA members
and noted, "The match is
about plowing and the
rural community, but it is
also about the people and
the volunteer effort that
makes It so unique."
Similar words of wel-
come and support were
offered by Huron MPP
Helen. Johns and Goderich
Mayor Deb Shewfelt.
The IPM, with its leg-
endary tented city and
