Changes made to French curriculum remain
by Michele Greene
SEAFORTH - Trustees
took a second look at
their decision to cut
French for Grade 1 to 3
students but they didn't
make any changes.
Last Tuesday night in
Seaforth, the Avon
Maitland District School
Board voted to stick with
its original decision to
eliminate core French
instruction for primary
students in Huron
County.
The board's results in
the provincial Grade 3
testing played a big factor
in the decision.
"1 took a closer look at
the results. I would have
to say that many of our
schools fall below the
provincial average. That
is a worrisome fact" said
assistant superintendent
Marie Parsons.
Schools without prima-
ry French can devote
more time to language
arts and math, she said.
In "fact, schools in Perth
County, where there is no
core French'for primary
students, fared better
than their counterparts
in Huron County, where
primary French is part of
the curriculum.
"Could it be the way we
teach English and math?
Throwing more time at
- the problem might not
help," said trustee Abby
Armstrong.
Parsons said the cause
of the low results is likely
a combination of factors,
one` of which could be
time.
"If the, time spent in
French was spent in

English, our scores. would
be higher," said trustee
Donald Brillinger,
Trustees originally
withdrew the program in
an effort to offer equity to
all students. The former
Huron County Board of
Education offered the
second language instruc-
tion for 20 minutes a day
to the primary students.
French was not part of
the curriculum for the
former Perth County
Board of Education.
To be fair to all stu-
dents, trustees had to
either cot the program
from Huron schools or
add it to Perth schools.
With a one-time
expense of $17,.000 on
classroom materials,
trustee Armstrong said it
wouldn't cost the board
significantly to enhance
the curriculum for Perth
students,
"1 wofald like to see the
continuation of core
French. I think we need
to rise up and not stay at
the minimum," said
trustee Colleen. Schenk.
Except for the Thames
Valley District School
Board, alt of the neigh-
bouring school boards
offer French at the pri-
mary level.
