EXETER/LUCAN — The
Hwy. 4 battle has tipped
the Lucan Irish's way
after their first two games
versus the Exeter Hawks
in their Jr. D Morenz
Division semi-final playoff
series.
Lucan won game one at
home 7-3 Feb. 17 and
game two at Exeter's
South Huron Rec Centre
6-5 on Friday.
Both games were
intense, rough affairs
reflecting the change
from the regular season
to the playoffs.
Lucan's powerplay was
the deciding factor in
game one with four goals
in eight attempts.
Lucan's depth offensive-
ly was shown with seven
different players scoring
the goals. The Irish goals
were scored by Dan
Hardick, Scott Philips,
Neal Judson, Justin
Mulligan, Corey Smith,
Mark Phillips and Kevin
Dunbar. Assists were
earned by Jason Amey,
Mark Phillips (2), Judson
(2), Hardick, Chad
Lambourn, Smith (2),
Dunbar (2), Dave Steer
and Mulligan.
Exeter's goals were
scored by Erik Abayof
with a pair and Jeff
Glavin with the only two
assists by Ben McCann.
Two of Exeter's three
goals came on the power-
play.
The score was 2-0 for
Lucan after the first peri-
od and 4-1 after the sec-
ond.
Hawks goaltender Andy
Glavin was busy between
the pipes with 43 saves
while Lucan's Mike Boyce
stopped 31 shots.
Friday's thriller was
decided with 1:20 left in
the game when Chad
Greenlee scored the win-
ning goal from . Ggeg
Henderson ; and Neal..
Costello.
The difference in the
game arguably happened
with a second left in the
first period when Lucan's
Scott Phillips scored from
Andy Marshall to make
the score 4-3 for Lucan.
Exeter pulled even at 4-
4 when McCann scored
on the powerplay from
Dave Farquhar and Jeff
Glavin.
Lucan scored a power-
play goal of their own to
break the tie with 2:03
left in the period. Costello
notched the goal with
assists by Mulligan and
Smith.
Exeter's Jarrett Jeffrey
tied the game
at 5-5 midway. •
through the "We just have to
third period carry it over and
from Bill duplicate it for
Jason Grenier. Wednesday night"
Lucan got off — EXETER HAWKS
to a fast start COACH SCOTT BOGART
when Dunbar
scored just 14 seconds
into the game from Matt
Porter and Mike
Jaremchenko.
Jeff Glavin tied the
game at 17:06 from
Jeremy Geoffrey and
Craig Corriveau. Costello
made it 2-1 for Lucan at
8:16 of the first from
Mulligan and Mark
Phillips. Exeter tied the
game again when Berton
Dykstra scored on the
powerplay from Geoffrey
and Jeff Glavin.
The Hawks took their
only lead of the game
with 2:26 left in the first
when Corriveau scored
from Jeff Glavin.
Lambourn made it 3-3
by scoring with 1:17 left
in the period from
Hardick and Costello.
The.Hawks were two for
eight on the powerplay in
game two and Lucan was
one for 11.
Irish co -coach Bill
Bourne said the rough
stuff and stick work is
probably in Exeter's play -
book.
"I guess that's their
plan," he said. "Them try-
ing to neutralize our tal-
ent. They were liberal
with their sticks. That's
their strategy."
Bourne said that as long
as the Hawks play it
rough, powerplays and
penalty killing will contin-
ue to be keys.
"We'll work on the pow-
erplay and that should
make the dif-
ference by
capitalizing on
the man
advantage,"
he said.
Hawks
coach Scott
Bogart said
the game had
a better flow on Friday,
adding his players put in
their best effort of the
Hodge and
season.
"We just have to carry it
over and duplicate it for
Wednesday night," Bogart
said. "You can't ask for
much more."
In the other Morenz
Division semi-final series,
Mitchell leads Seaforth 2-
0.
Game three is 8:15 p.m.
tonight at Lucan
Community Memorial
Centre. Game four is at
South Huron Rec Centre
on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
