GRAND BEND — By or-
ganizing the Paint the
Huron Shores art con-
test, Grand Bend artist
Barry Richman could be
planting the seed that
will help art bloom in the
region.
Richman is optimistic
about this year's show
and sale taking place at
the Lambton Heritage
Museum March 12-28.
Marine themes, land-
scapes, architectural,
historical or regional flo-
ra and fauna are all en-
couraged to compete for
over $4,000 in cash and
purchase awards, with
$2,000 for 'Best in
Show'.
Last year, 60 artists
submitted 85 pieces of
art and as of late last
week, Richman had
mailed 150 applications
to interested artists.
Richman said this year
will be a good test of
whether the show is sus-
tainable and he hopes to
get more corporate spon-
sorship on board.
One reason for or-
ganizing the Paint the
Huron Shores show is to
provide a venue for rep-
resentational artists —
painters of landscapes
and realism.
"There aren't a lot of
professional venues for
representational artists,"
Richman said, noting
there are many shows
for objective, abstract or
abstract expressidnism
art which he says is the
"darling of the critics
Barry Richman of Grand Bend hopes the Paint the Huron Shores art show and
contest will promote artists and the Lake Huron region. Beside Richman is Aus-
able in Autumn by Bill Nieuwland of Huron Woods and other representational
paintings that depict the theme of the show.
these days."
His love of the com-
munity and the Lake Hu-
ron area is another rea-
son for the show which is
patterned after the high-
ly successful Art for the
Parks shows in the U.S.
Richman believes the
show will also help the
tourism
industry
by ex-
panding
the Sea-
son and
raising
awarenes
s of the
Huron
shoreline
for a
"new kind of visitor."
"I'd love to have people
come to the area who
plan art and painting
holidays and paint the
area and enter the
show," Richman ex-
plained.
Looking at the longer
term, Richman sees cal-
endars and post cards in
the mix and hopes the
projects "will develop
the community in the
cultural
sense."
"We have
a good her-
itage from
the Huron
Country
Playhouse
but we don't
put a lot of
stock into
the visual
arts," Richman said.
He'd like profits from
the show and associated
endeavors to go back
"I'd love to have people
come to the area who
plan art and painting
holidays and paint the
area and enter the
show?'
