three gold medals and
placed seventh out of 35
teams . at last _ year's
Bernie Deveau Memorial
competition.
This year theteam won.
gold at the Niagara
Region and Central
Ontario' competitions.
Exeter's '.two other
teams; the Novice Classics
and the Pre -Juvenile
Mini -Classics, have also
done well this season.
The Novice Classics
placed. seventh out of 18
teams . and the Pre -
Juveniles brought home a
bronze medal from com-
petitions last week.
This is the first time
Exeter has hosted an
adult synchronized com-
petition. About 1,000
skaters and spectators
will descend upon Exeter
for the event. S3Y-
Admission is $5 for
adults, $3 for seniors and
students, and children
under age 5 are free..
The adult -only competi-
tion is named for the late
Bernie Deveau who
founded the event 12
yearsago in Dorchester.
Deveau was a strong
supporter of skating in
Dorchester and acted as
the volunteer accounted
for various community
groups in the town.
Deveau died of cancer
six years ago.. Formally
known as the Adults -Only
Precision Competition, the
event was renamed two
years ago on its 10th
anniversary to try and
heighten awareness of the
event.
Deveau's widow, Irene,
said her husband wanted
to start a fun competition
so adult synchronized
skaters (then known as
precision) could meet and
socialize.
Although small at first,
the eventproved to be a
success and has grown
ever since. _.
