S'Noah's Ark Winter Carnival runs srn By k: TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — The 13th Annual Grand Bend Winter Carnival has been deemed a success by carnival manag- er Dave Sheppard. Running from Feb. 5-14 with the S'Noah's Ark theme, the 10 -day event brought people to Grand Bend for a wide range of winter activities. One of the keys to success was that individual busi- nesses were involved in many more events than in previ- ous years, Sheppard said. "Things ran very smoothly this year," Sheppard told the T -A on Monday. The carnival was also a success financially with major bills already paid, Sheppard reported. Fund-raising events throughout the year, ticket sales to events, spon- sors, local grants, draws and raffles contribute to the bottom line. More than 100 volunteers help with the two-week event that livens up the village of 1,000 people. "Volunteers were super this year — probably the rea- son things went so smoothly. What would we do without them?" Sheppard said. Weather came into play again this year. Only two events — the figure skating demonstration at Oakwood and the Olde Fashioned Skating party -- had to be can- celled because of mild weather. The mild weather destroyed the ice carvings and snow sculptures created the first weekend but 'new carvings were enjoyed by visitors on the second weekend. Eight snow sculpting teams also had to adjust to the weather. Rain on Thursday delayed the start of the carving until the mercury dipped on Thursday night. Sheppard said the freezing temperature Friday "made the water-logged blocks like ice on the outside and 'moosch' on the inside." The experienced teams sculpted outlines then left it 'to freeze. The fine cuts were left until Saturday. The team of Nick Whalen and Ian Washington from Sarnia and Grand Bend's Cam Haist won the competi- tion with a team from Mexico City finishing second. Haist said the team spent 22 hours carving the intri- cate sculpture. The Saturday morning flurries also put a damper on the attendance at the parade and the remainder of the day's -activities. With hundreds of participants and many more specta- tors, the carnival fulfilled its goal of bringing people to Grand Bend throughout the year. Grand Bend Winter Carnival winners Ontario .
