Lebanon Forest Masonic Lodge #133 secretary Dan Traquair, left, hands Exet-
er Centennials Soccer Club president George McEwan a $500 cheque to go
towards the South Huron Rec Centre soccer pitch light project. About
$30,000 of the $45,000 total cost of the project has been raised so far, McE-
wan said. The lights will benefit all of Exeter minor soccer but are required by
the Exeter Centennials senior men's soccer team that moves up to the First
Division this season after winning the Second Division season title last year.
Program provides positive
image of young people
The common percep-
tion of people today is.
that the youth -are a
nuisance at best and :a
menace at worst.
To dispel this rayl;
the Federal
Government created
Youth, _ Service
,Canada(YSC} in 4994. -
The effects of this
program are beginning
to be felt 'on the local
levee.
The YSC program
began on January 4th.
in Lucan. The ten_
youths(ages 18-24)
involved with the pro-
gram are currently
working out of the
Ausable Centre.
The people involved
with the program have
taken the name Youth
Uniting Communities
(Y.U.C.).
The participants feel
that by providing the
local area with a posi-
tive image of young
people that they can
begin to change and
enrich the local com-
munities.
Some local commu-
nity groups have
approached the Y.U.C.
with ideas on enrich-
ing the community.
Other ideas are being
generated by the
Y.U.C., based on what
they have observed in
the community.
As well as assessing
and addressing the
needs of the local com-
munity, the partici-
pants are also develop-
ing more marketable
skills for the competi-
tive job market. The
Y.U.C. participants are
receiving training in
computers, career
planning, small busi-
nessmanagement and
appreciation of group
-dynamics..
The participants are
wrapping up a suc-
cessful Random Acts of
Kindness campaign, as
well as running an
afterschool program
and a White . ribbon
campaign to raise
awareness against
domestic violence.
Among the projects
that the participants
are developing are a
St. Patrick's Day win-
ter carnival, a coffee
house forum for young
people's creative ener-
gies (Igneus Corvus), a
N.
babysitting service, a
messenger service and
the restoration and
beautification: of Elm
Street Park.

Community project, or
