It wasn't until Friday afternoon that
Ruth told Humphery, her husband of 60
years,, what went through her mind
when he sat in front of her at an
anniversary service at the Anderson
church.
They got to know each
other through community
events such as dances and
suppers and were marrie
on June 18, 1938.
Their life-long philosophy
of living within their means
began on their honeymoon.
Humphery says he had $50
in his pocket and Ruth had'
$15 when they borrowed his
brother's car and traveled
through southern Ontario.
The itinerary included a
visit to the Dionne quintu-
plets, a ferry ride to Queenston and
sightseeing at the Welland Canal and St.
Catherines.
"We landed home with enough money
to buy overalls and a rolling pin,"
Humphery smiled.
The newlyweds started farming in
Blanshard Twp., a mile east of
Anderson, with two cows and a team of
horses from Humphery's father.
For the Arthurs, the hard work of
farming was the basis for a happy mar-
riage.
"We had to work together to make
things go," Humphery said.
Looking back on the highlights, Ruth
said 194(1 was a banner year.. In
January, their first son was born atld in
.December, their daughter arrived.
While their two children Donald and
Doris reside in London, their son Garry
is no longer living.
With more than 60
years experience,
what. advice do the
Arthurs have for
newlyweds?
"For people start-
ing outlike we did,
not flush with
money? Donit- buy
something until you
can pay for. it,"
Humphery said,
adding it's better to
buy something
simple or used if
the money's not
available.
"Work for everything you get," Ruth
added.
When asked about the happiest times,
the Arthurs were quick to speak of their
trips to Canada's east and west coasts.
They have relatives in Western Canada
including grandchildren.
The Arthurs have enjoyed a happy
retirement, living on Simcoe ;St. in.
Exeter. They are regulars at the Dining
for Seniors programs and have been
volunteer drivers for Meals -on -Wheels,
doctor's appointments and church.
