February 10. 1999 Lack of snow does not hinder fun at carnival In addition to the many competitions around Grand Bend during this year's Winter Carnival, the village is decorated with many ice sculptures such as these two giraffes.The carnival continues all this week and wraps up Sunday.A new attraction, the Winter Carnival Parade, will start at I i :30 a.m. Saturday on Main Street. Other activities this weekend include a road hockey tournament, sno- pitch competitions, a figure skating showcase and a waiters' obstacle race. Exeter Public School sent four teams to the Grand Bend Winter Carnival's Junior Snow Sculpting competition last Thursday. Pictured is the Exeter team whose sculpture of an ark won first prize out of four competing schools. From left are Matthew Mattucci,Aaron Daters, Marten Girard and Michael Cooper.Absent are Jason Sangster and Dan Hooper.The team also finished in 2nd place in the People's Choice contest. Gail Sadler heaves a "turkey" down the lane , during the Turkey Bowl Tournament Sunday at the Winter Carnival. Because of the warm weather, long sheets of plastic were used as lanes instead of ice.The pins were actually plastic pop containers full of ice... The carnival also featured indoor activities for children as Lucan's Nicole Rogers, left, and Jenny Bieber warmed up in the Legion and played some mini -golf. POLICE BRIEFS • POLICE BRIEFS Rash of break-ins believed linked GRAND BEND — The North Lambton OPP believes a series of break-ins and attempted break-ins in Grand Bend are linked to the same two men. North Lambton OPP said witnesses saw two males pulling on doors of a shed behind a Beach St. home on Feb. 2 at about 1:30 a.m. The doors fell to the ground causing a loud bang and the suspects fled the scene and were last seen running towards Oakwood Park. The only description obtained is both males were about 6' tall. The OPP said they "scoured; the area but were unable to locate them." Witnesses informed the OPP about two males In their early 20s seen run- ning from a break-in at a home on Dietrich Cres. at about 1 a.m. Feb. 3. The thieves kicked in the rear door of the home and rummaged through the 9 from the inside and threw them out, - house. The person found one MI pint of Molson Canadian Ice beer, one full litre bottle .of ValdeVos .red wine, a Hitachi CD player and a Hitachi stereo. North •Lambton OPP Constjuke George advises Grand Bend residents to not hesitate phoning the OPP if they see something out of the ordinary "If people see any suspicious people they don't recognize phone us as soon as possible," George said. If you have information on the break- ins or any other crimes, call the North Lambton OPP at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Another Grand Bend break-in GRAND BEND — Victims of a break- in at a Elmwood Ave. Grand Bend home don't know if anything was stolen but sure know the culprits were messy. North Lambton OPP received the break-in report Friday. The person or people responsible broke off the rear door to the home and threw property around inside. They also took , clothes Andrew St. job nets thieves stuff worth $1,200 • EXETER — A break-in to an 'Andrew St. home in Exeter sometime over Jan. 30-31 netted thieves $1,200 in stolen goods. London OPP Const. Myra Rusk said jewelry, money and a VCR were stolyn after an unforced entry to the resi- dence.
