Times-Advocate, 1999-02-03, Page 34BileeewininestigOvistale' Announcements Wednesday, February 3, 1999 Out of sight, out ofd mom EXETER - Two public education workshops on private - and municipal sewage treatment systems are being C.yli• planned as part of a water quality improvement pilot pro- ject on Mar. 23 and July 10. This project has been initialed by the Ausable sayt3eld Conservation Authority (ABCA) and ,the Huron County Planning and Development Department (HCPDD) in the Hay/Zurich/St. Joseph Watershed. The project's steering committee of local residents interested in and concerned about the environmental health of their community are' determining the direction of this endeavour. The ABCA and HCPDD provide technical support and coordination along the way. The workshops have been designed to raise the infor- mation and awareness levels of sewage treatment sys- tems, such as septic systems arid the. Zurich Lagoons. Through a series of guest speakers with expertise in this area, the following commonly asked questions will be No", answered: ', • What is thepurpose of septic systems and how • do they work? ` • What are the laws and responsibilities involved with owning a septic system? - • How can septic systems be properly maintained to last longer and save.money? • What is involved with the upgrade of the Zurich Lagoons? • What are the health risks associated with sewage treatment systems? All of this and more will be explained at the two identi- cal workshops that will be held at the Hay Township Hall in Zurich on Tuesday, March 23, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, July 10, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any person interest- ed in learning more about what happens "after the flush" is invited to attend. With regret, trustees accepted the resignation: of trustee Wood who rep- resents St. Marys, Perth South and West Perth. • "Leslie has been a superlative member of this board. This is a loss to the community she represents," said trustee Abby Armstrong. Trustee Wood cited personal reasons for choosing to resign, which. took effect on Jan. 29. A committee consisting of schools council chairs, municipal representa- tives, trustees and admin- istration will select a replacemet fo r her. Marklevitz is leaving the board for her new position as the head of business with the Waterloo Region District School 13oar,d which began on Feb. 1. Trustee Ray Ford wished Marklevitz the best in her new post. Although the board is happy for her, he admit- ted trustees and adminis- trators will miss her. Trustee Ford said she has helped trustees under- stand the complicated. and 'changing funding, fig- ures from the Ministry of Education and Training. ' Trustees , welcomed Marjatta Langston, of Sudbury, as the board's new superintendent of education. She takes over. the position . held by Arthur Duboyce whoa recently retired. • Previously, . she worked in education as a sec- ondary vice-principal and principal District winners named STRATFORD - Several students in Huron and Perth counties were named district winners of the Marion Drysdale award. Sponsored by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, the awards are for creative works in poetry, prose and art. The names of the dis- trict winners will be for- warded to Toronto for Judging at the regional winners. Two students from F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham are district winners. Ty Gallagher received an award in the basic category. In the general category, Brad Wright was honoured. Joanne VanLo, of Listowel District Secondary School received an award in the advanced category, Kristin Kittmer of St. Marys DCVI received an award for her painting. In the Grade 9 catego- ry, Robyn Hastie, of Seaforth District High School received an award. Also receiving an award was Angela McCabe, an adult student at Central Huron Adult Learn Centre in Vanastra. Gift for disabilities received. STRATFORD The Avon Maitland District School Board received a gener- ous gift from a former teacher who died a year ago. The late Elizabeth Klockman left. over $200,000to the Avon Maitland DIstrict ,School Board to be used to help students with mental and physical disabilities. She died on Christmas Day 1997, at the age of 87. Superintendent of edu- cation Susan Burke said principals are now reviewing schools to see how the money can be used to best help stu- dents. She described the donation as "very gener- ous" and one that will make a significant differ- ence for students. Klockman's career spanned over 30 yee,rs, ending in 1971. She spent most of those years in rural schools in the for- mer • Mornington Township, which is now a part of North Perth. An active member of the Women's Institute, she felt it was important to teach students about home economics and management. After her retirement, Klockman enjoyed spending time with children.
