Peter Garland to speak at
Men's Breakfast meeting

CENTRALIA - Gladys Buswell was the guest of
honour ata birthday celebration held for her at
Centralia United Church on January 17. Family and
friends shared the occasion of her 75th birthday
with her at an open house hosted by her daughters,
Pearl Dougall and Jean Sieman and their families.
Upcoming activities
A Men's Breakfast will be held at Centralia United
Church on January 23 beginning at 8:30 a.m. with
guest speaker Peter Garland. He has been very
involved in John Davidson's across -Canada walk,
'Jesse's Journey: A Father's Tribute' to raise funds
for genetic research. He is in BritishColumbia to
broadcast with John Davidson as he completes his
journey on January 20. Tickets cost only $5 and are
available from the Stewards.
The congregation at Centralia United Church will
meet with Lori Stewart following worship on.
January 24, to develop their Mission Statement.
Members of the congregation are asked to partici-
pate in this activity and to bring their faith and
ideas. A potluck lunch is planned and squares or
sandwiches would be appreciated.
Centralia United Church will host another Fun
Night for the Sunday School children on January 27.
Annual Congregational Meetings will be held at
Zion on January 28 and at Centralia on February 3
at 8 p.m. •
On February 4, women of the Centralia U.C.W.
will hold a meeting at the church at 8 p.m.
The annual Family night Potluck will be held at
Zion West United Church on February 5 beginning
at 6 p.m.
Euchre results
At Larry's Town and Country Restaurant in
Crediton on January 12, Helen MacDonald and
Marian Noels were the High Point winners. Marg
Baker and Howard Dolan were the Lone Hand win-
ners. The lowest scores of the day were Bernice
Squires and Nola Lewis.
Family home burns down in Elimville

THAMES ROAD - The January
meeting of the U.C.W. was held on
Tuesday with 27 women present.
Jean Hodgert, the new president
opened the business part of the
meeting with a poem "Starting a
New". Hodgert welcomed everyone
and all repeated the "United Church
Women's Purpose." The roll call
was answered by bringing a
Christmas greeting or a stamp from
another country and telling about it.
The minutes were read by the sec-
retary Diane Jeffery. Several carets
of thanks were read, Marilyn P vni
gave the treasurers report.
The visiting committee for the
next four months are: Group U.
Margaret Stewart; Group C Doris
Simpson; Group W. Janet Coward;
The annual meeting of the U.C.W.
Presbyterial will be held at
Centralia hosted by the Zion U.C.W.
The women are catering to the
Oddfellow's banquet at Kirkton-
Woodham Community Centre on
March 27.
The annual congreg meet-
ing will be held on February 7.
Business part of the meeting closed
with the U.C.W. prayer.
The World Outreach Committee
• were in charge of the worship ser-
vice. Marjorie Johns opened with a
poem "Winter Awakening". "In
Christ There is no East 'or West"
was sung. The theme for the .meet
ing was "Uprooted People". Marion
Cann read the scripture. Helen
Weston read scripture and also led
in prayer. Doris Elford received the
offering with prayer by Helen
Weston.
President
given
GRAND BEND - It was
Epiphany Sunday,
January 3 at Grand Bend
United Church. The
theme was "Arise,
Shine!" with the service
conducted by Rev. R.
Putman.
The children's hymn
was a carol, "As With
Gladness, Men of Old."
The choir's anthem was.
"Open my eyes that I may
see" accompanied by
Elva McIntyre at the
organ.
United. Church. Women
will meet January 14 at
1:30 p.m. The roll call
will be "A New Year's
Resolution."
The Baptism of Jesus I
was the theme on
January 10 at Grand
Bend United Church. The
scriptures were read by
Hank Ford.
When Rev. R. Putman 1
spoke to the children, he
recalled the game of "I
spy" and played it with
them, telling them the
dove is the spirit of God
and always with them.
He spoke to the congre-
gation of the Heavenly
Father's unconditional
love.
At the close of the ser-
vice, U.C.W. president,
Evelyn Johnson was pre-
sented gifts by members
for all her work in the
church.
A reading from the Observer
"Praying for their Lives" by Doris
Elford.
A solo on tape by Lois Wilson who
sang "The Lord's Prayer" which
was much enjoyed.
A reading "A Housewife's Secret
Letter" by Marion Cann.
Marjorie Johns had a reading
about Jacob's move to Egypt and
also conducted the Bucci game of
Promises and Problems.
All joined hands in a circle and
pronounced the Mizpah
Benediction.
Church service
Rev. Marilyn Carter was in charge
of the regular church service on
Sunday morning at Thames Road
with a good attendance. The Introit
was sung, and Rev. Carter gave
greetings, welcome, and the
announcements.
The officers of the U.C.W. came
forward for the Installation of the
Officers with Rev. Carter conducting
the service of the Executive.
Rev. Carter lit the Christ Candle
with the help of Ashley McKnight,
followed by a youth story. The choir
sang "I'll Tell the World" accompa-
nied by the organist Marilyn
Vandenbussche.
The Scripture Lesson was read by
Jean Hodgert. The title of the ser-
mon was "De -Lighted Christians".
John Miner and Brian Pym
received the offering as well as
being the greeters.
Congregation work
A volunteer is needed for snow -
blowing the yard at Thames Road
from the last Sunday in January to
the first Sunday in March. Please
contact Larry Fulton.
Please have your typed annual
report to John Miner by January 24.
Drivers needed
Youth Sunday School Class will
need drivers to and from London
Train Station for eight people plus
their luggage on Friday, February
26 at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday
February 28 at 2:30 p.m. if interest-
ed contact Virginia Warwick or
Carolyn Johns.
"Lentscape" A Lenton study series
of seven sessions from February 15
to March 29. Monday nights at 7:30
p.m. on "Vision TV" beginning at
Margaret Stewart's home. If inter-
ested, contact Rev. Carter, Marg;
Stewart or Karen Etherington.
January 20, Messengers and
Junior Youth Group are going skat-
ing on the rink behind Kirkton
United Church from 7-8 p.m. Bring
a toonie. Hot chocolate and a snack
will be provided.
Sunday, January 24 Youth Sunday.
School class will be providing coffee
and snacks after the church service..
A donation to the Youth Tools
Mission Project will be appreciated.
Sunday February 7 the Annual
meeting following the church ser-
vice at Elimville. Please bring sand-
wiches or squares.
Personals
Get well wishes are extended to
Millie Fulton and Brian Miller, and
also to Dennis Hutton who was
badly burned on Saturday evening
when the family home was burnt
down.
After church on Sunday a very
generous donation was given by the
church goers. If community mem-
bers wish to donate money to the
Hutton's, drop off locations are at
Pat Ballantyne's, Shirley Coopers,
Joyce Fulton's or Grace Pym's.
