Players on the Lucan Novice Girls Leprechauns hockey team were asked by their coach, Brian Sowerby, to write an essay saying what they like and dislike about hockey. The rea- son? To get feedback from the young players they might not voice face to face with their adult coaches. "I feel the kids are young and intimidated by the coaching staff," Sowerby said. "I wanted to make the game more fun in practices." Sowerby explained because girls hockey is still relatively new to the area, there is a wide disparity between skill levels on his team. Practices can be bor- ing for the more developed players because the coaches have to gear the practices for everyone. Sowerby got the idea to have his players write essays Brom a sports psychologist while he was helping with hockey camps in the Gravenhurst area. "Basically you get to see where their head are," he said. Sowerby handed out prizes to the writers of the best essays he and his coaching staff judged. Sowerby plans on having the girls write another essay at the end of the season to see how they've progressed, both on the ice and off. He also plans on having his players write essays every season. "I think everyone should do it," Sowerby said, meaning all minor hockey coaches should have theiilayers tell them in writing what ,,they feel or what they need to be better hockey players. Here are three of the essays: Once there was a girl. Her name was Brittney. She played on a girls hockey team. On Saturday they played against Parkhill. They did not know if it was a tie or a loss. They figured it was a tie. Then before we left the coachrcame in and said "I have made a date for a party on Wednesday, Nov. 30. If you can make it then come; if you can't then do not worry about it." Soon it would be the party but Brittney was in the mall. She was worried that she would not make it. When Brittney got there, she thought the party was over but there was some- thing she did not know. It was a surprise party for Brittney. There was all kinds of snacks. But at 9 p.m. they had a hockey game. When they got there when the game started See ESSAYS page I 1 ij .;. i,...
