Brussels Livestock Sales
BRUSSELS - Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week
ending December 30.
Fed Cattle: 373 Cows: 204
Veal and Bob Calves: 134 Lambs and Goats: 137
The fed steers and heifers sold steady. Cows sold $1-
$2 higher. Veal sold on a fully steady market. Lambs
sold barely steady.
There were 286 steers on offer selling from 87.00 to
91.00 to the high of 99.00.
One hundred and fifty-two steers consigned by
Bender Beef Farms, Hensali averaging 1418 lbs, sold
for an average of 89.44 with sales to 99.00.
Twenty-six steers consigned by Cunningham Farms,
Lucan averaging 1438 lbs. sold for an average of
89.16 with sales to 93.75.
Ten steers consigned by Sidney M. Martin, Holstein
averaging 1348 lbs. sold for an average of 88.56 with
sales to 91.00.
Eleven steers consigned by Lorne Benedict, Kerwood
averaging 1377 lbs. sold for an average of 87.84 with
sales to 90.50.
Eleven steers consigned by Murray Wagg, Mitchell
averaging 1272 lbs. sold for an average of 87.92 with
sales to 90.00.
Six steers consigned by Terry McCarthy, Dublin
averaging 1647 lbs. sold for an average of 83.85 with
sales to 86.25.
There' were 81 heifers on offer selling from 87.00 to
91.00 to the high of 91.25.
Eight heifers consigned by Paul Aldwinkle, Varna
averaging 1294 lbs. sold for an average of 88.44 with
sales to 89.75.
Three heifers consigned by Karl Terpstra, Mitchell
averaging 1233 lbs. sold for an average of 88.67 with
sales to 88.75.
Two heifers consigned by Darren Beuermann,
Dublin averaging 1408 lbs. sold for an average of
83.93 with sales to 85.50.
There were 204 cows on offer selling: D1 and D2
cows - 52.00-56.00 to the high of 76.00; D3 - 47.00-
52.00; D4 cows - 37.00 to 47.00.
Three hol. cows consigned by Benneweiss Farms
Ltd., Dublin averaging 1177 lbs. sold for an average of
57.78 with sales to 67.50.
There were 5 bulls on offer selling 58.50-62.50 to
the high of 70.50.
Two bulls consigned by Cecil Ayerhart, Elmwood
averaging 1787 lbs. sold for an average of 60.52 with
sales to 62.50.
There were 132 veal on offer selling from: beef -
85.00 to 123.00; ho - 85:00 to 100.00; plain hol - 60.00
to 85.00.
Five veal consigned by Henry Bos, Blyth averaging
734 lbs. sold for an average of 102.32 with sales to
123.00.
One veal consigned by Rob Dekens, Clinton weighing
680 lbs. sold for 122.00.
There were 132 lambs and sheep on offer.
Lambs: Under 50 lbs. 190.00 to 222.50
50 to 64 lbs. 200.00 to 215.00
65 to 80 lbs. 182.50 to 195.00
Sheep: 42.50 to 89.00

Weather the big story in 1998

The winter of 1997-98
was very mild with little
snow cover or precipita-
tion. Spring came early
with a warm spell around
April Fool's Day.
Temperatures have been
above average since then,
except for four nights of
frost the second week of
June.
Heat units were ahead
all season and by the end
of September total heat
unit accumulation was
around 15-20 per cent
higher (400-500 heat
units) than long-term
averages. ..quite phe-
nomenal.
Rainfall was the real
story of the year, with
amounts extremely vari-
able. Conditions during
April and May were very
dry which extended Into
late .June before apprecia-
ble amounts of rain were
received. Areas closer to
Lake Huron received less
rainfall, particularly the
areas of Baytleld, Blyth,
Seaforth, and Brucefield
area, and Belgrave,
Gorrie and Brussels areas
which experienced
drought conditions,
receiving less than one-
half of normal rainfall.
Most other areas were
dry, with some fortunate
enough to receive timely
rains in early August.
Fall weather continued
warmer and drier than
normal with the fir st
hard frost not occurring
until October 21st,

The market at Denfield traded on a good demand with'
prices $1-$2 higher. American orders were strong on
choice well-fed cattle.
Dennis Dietrich, Dashwood had the high average for 6
heifers, 1245 lbs., avg. price 92.67, sales to 97, all pur-
chased by Norwich Packers. -
Dave Hicks, Sarnia, sold 6 head, average weight 1288,
average price 89.37.
Gord Hardy, Lucan sold 6 steers, average weight 1330,
average price 89.65.
Oscar Horst, Listowel, sold 4 steers, average weight
1515, average price 91.36, sales to 98, purchased by
Norwich Packers.
Jim and Brad Scott, Lucan sold 11 head, average weight
1355, average price 90.64, sales to 98.00, purchased by
Norwich Packers.
Choice steers: 90-93, sales to. 102; Good 'steers: 87-90;
Common: 77-85; Choice heifers: 90-92, sales to 101; Good
heifers: 87-90; Sows: 15-20; Boars: 12-15; Common: 75-
85; Good cows: 50-58; Medium cows: 45-50; Shells: 30-40;
Good veal: 80-90; Common: 70-80; Direct to packer cows
over 600 lbs.: 97; Direct bulls: 100.
