Dance raises cash for Zurich arena,
ZURICH — While final
figures aren't in yet, orga-
nizers are happy with last
week's New Year's dance
which raised money for
the Zurich arena.
The 48 -year-old arena,
whose cement floor is
cracking, needs a new
stjrface and cooling sys-
tem. The fund-raising
committee announced at
the dance that it also
wants to replace the
boards and the glass and
possibly renovate the
dressing rooms.
Renovations could cost
$300,000.
Fund-raising committee
secretary Cheryl Durand
said while the committee
only sold 150 of the 300
available tickets for the
dance, it was "a very suc-
cessful dance." She esti-
mated $2,500 was raised
for the arena.
Durand said the New
Year's Eve dance was just
a start for the committee,
adding the evening
worked to make more
people aware of the

also . said the dance
received support from`
people in Zurich's neigh-
bouring communities.
The committee's next
step will be to get togeth-
er canvassing groups to
collect money door-to-
door. Donation boxes will
also be located around
the village.
Durand said the com-
mittee is also looking into
the federal government's
millennium fund project,
which would see the gov-
ernment' matching any
funds the committee rais-
es.
While the committee
hopes to begin renova-
tions on the arena in
2000, Durand 'said the
group still has to have a
feasibility study done to
see if the project is viable.
She said she's optimistic
the project will be a suc-
cess, but admitted the
committee needs more
support and more dedi-
cated members.
Durand also stressed
the importance of getting
the arena fixed up.
`Without a community'.
