December 2nd, 1998 * The deer cull at the Pinery Provincial •Park was deemed a success by the park after 160 deer were killed last week. Before last week's cull the. deer population at the park exceeded 900. The park can realistically only hold 150-175. * Sixteen local charities will share $16,517 from the provincial government. The money came after the government eliminated roving charity casinos and the lump sum carne to be divided between the local charities. * History was madeat the Exeter Fire department after the bell used to call volunteers in 1880 was permanently loaned to the station from the Huron County Museurh. The bell was refurbished and mounted for display through the generous efforts of three Local businesses. - December 9th, 1998 *As a result of the business merger between Big "O" and Armtec, whose head office is in Guelph, lay- offs are considered very likely. The newly -formed company will only need one head office making the office staff at Big "0" redundant. * A proposed. funeral home in Hensall gets the green light after some neighbors voiced their con- cerns over more traffic in the area. The owners of the property faced an OMB meeting that lasted three hours but in the end they were given the go ahead to start building. * Dave Moyer has gotten the job of the newly cre- ated Service Delivery Manager. After -the ad was posted in the London Free Press several candidates were interviewed and Moyer got the job. - December 16th, 1998 *Schools in the Avon Maitland District will see lots of changes in the coming year. Possible boundary changes will be looked at by Board members combined with the elimination of portables, demolition of unrenovated space, leasing of space, sharing or exchanging facilities with the with the Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board and adding an advanced design and technology program to the secondary schools. * Don Currell, administrator of the South Huron Hospital is leaving effective Jan. 31, 1999. Currell pointed to doctor shortages and the prob- lem with keeping South Huron's. emergency room open in the summer as challenges during his time as administrator. • * The. Town of Exeter and the Townships of Stephen and Usborne haveagreedto enter into amalgamation talks -- again. The next Women's Institute meeting will be held on January 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of President Bridget Groot. They also December 23rd, 1998 * The South Huron Hospital has received over $260,000 from the provincial government to help with the Y2K problem and restructuring costs. * Norah Lee Elson received the Lucan Citizenship Award at a Lucan council meeting. The Lucan Citizenship Committee chose Elson from a list of candidates it had on file and new nominees. * Changes in the Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership are designed to make hospitals more efficient with health care dollars, according to the Partnership's CEO. Bonnie Adamson said she believed the partnership is moving in the right direc- tion and said it can act as a model for other rural hospitals. *Residents in Stephen Township shouldn't be con- cerned about their drinking water. Morgan Bland. Philip Duby and Michael Love provided a musical prelude. The call to worship was given by Charlie Love. &candle in the Advent Wreath was- lit by Alyssa and Matthew Nichols. Piano solos were given by Ainslie Murdock and Alyssa Nichols. Ryan Murdock gave the prayer of approach. Scriptures were read by Amy Jennison. The meditation was given by Kaley and Amy Jennison. As the offering was collected -by Patrick and Philip -Duby, Michael and Holly Love, Jessie Morgan and Conrad Love. music was played by Sarah and Lynn Tremain. The choir's anthem was sung with flute and piano accompaniment. More than 40 gifts were collected from the Angel Tree project to help chil- dren of the Huron County Children's Aid. On December 27 at Grand Bend United Church, a Hebrew scripture reading from Isaiah was read by Rob Linden. Rev. R. Putman's medita- tion topic was entitled "The Journey". Rev. Putman told the story of Mary and Joseph's trip taking baby Jesus to Jerusalem. Don McLean sang "Silent Night."
