The fire, which was at 411 Main St., was believed to be caused by fluorescent lighting equipment on the buildings sign. Nobody was hurt. * The village of Zurich has asked its. residents to help pay for a new arena floor. which will cost -$:300 00U. October 7th, 1998 * The Avon Maitland district school board and District 8. of the Ontario Seeondar-y .School 't'eacher's, ratified the two year deal. Under the new - deal, teachers will not have to teach the extra class- es that it they would have to under Bill 160. Instead. 10 new teachers will be hired to 'do the extra work. * Parents and trustees alike have taken to protest- ing the anticipated closure of three local schools. Parents from Stephen Central, McCurdy and Hensall public schouls have voiced their. concerns over school closure. Trustees from the Avon Maitland school board also had concerns. * According to the investigation by the firm of B.M. Ross, the Old Pryde street sewer is to blame for the flooding during high rainfall. Although the investi- gation -is not complete, an engineer from B.M. Moss gave a list of recommendations to the town council. October 14th, 1998 * The village of Zurich council decided at its (ct. 8 meeting.to pull out of talks 'with its municipal restructuring cutnrnittee ot'six and pursue talks with Hay township. - * 5111)115 annual commencement and graduation exercises were held on October 9th .with awards and • scholarships being handed out. The valedictorian was Terri Hamather and the top students were Jacob Weber and Jilleana Knip. *The town will hire a new manager after internal restructuring. The new manager will be the Service Delivery Manager and will be reslo,nsible for plan- ning and delivering public works, recreation pro- grams and facilities, parks and cerneteries. October .21st, 1998 * 'the Exeter Public School now hats a new mascot • identity and name. After a contest; the judges unani- mously picked Beth Ilundey's drawing of an eagle and Jeff' Weidu's name of Sonic. *The town of Exeter- and its insurance• agency has decided that it will nut pay for the damage caused by the basement floodings. A group of homeowners whose houses were flooded demanded that the town pay. * Victim's rights activist Donna French spoke in l.ucan on Sunday night. Drench, who was'the Moth- er of Kristen French; documented what it felt like during and after her daughter's disappearance. Kristen went missing on April •16, 1992 and police found her body in Burlington twei weeks -later. Paul Bernardo and Karla lfomolka were charged. -October 28th. 1998 * 'Town of Exeter staff' investigated downspouts in the Dow subdivision and along Abbey Lane, Pinewood, and Huron St. 1:. to .determine if there .were any connections to the sanitary sewers ' 'li - gal connections were found. * Over 600 people marched on Saturd.,i, protest possible school closures in Huron al, Counties. Parents, students, teachers .and even some board trustees walked through the streets of down- town Stratford. * 911 emergency signs are -now up in Usborne •county with die erection of property plates.. Most of the signs are up but some are still missing from sideroads and a few concessions.
