(April 22/98) Top coach. South Huron District High School teacher Joe Fulop is this year's winner of the 3MITA coach of the year award. Fulop is a long-time Exeter area hardball coach and SHDHS cross-country coach. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat were celebrated as brightly as ever in the Times - Advocate during the past year. A heart -stopping playoff run by the Exeter Jr. D Hawks hockey team, several all -Ontario team titles and some incredible individual performances highlighted the sporting year and made it a plea- sure to cover sports for the T -A s hff. • Here's our highlight reel of the past year: JANUARY •The Exeter Jr. U' Ilawks send forwards Jeff Campbell and Chris McDonald to the league all-star game while the Lucan Irish send defence - man Jeremy Lambourn, forward Mark Phillips and goaltender Mike Boyce. •The Irish overtake the Hawks for first place in the Morenz Division. •The Exeter Juvenile Chiefs hockey team are moved by the league up to 'B' from 'CC' for the play- offs. FEBRUARY •The Lucan Novice Lasers win the Mite - Novice 'C' International Silver.Stick Championship at St. Clair Shore, Mich., by winning the final 3-2 over the Florida Golden Wolves. •Lindsay Parsons bound for Milan, Italy, as part of London's Synchronicity precision skating team for the Spring Cup interna- tional competition., •Irish and Hawks finish the regular season in first and second place respec- tively in the Morenz Division. , •Lucan's Katherine •Devlaeminck, 30, named London City Soccer Club's MVP and most dedicated player. •South Huron District Fligh School midget girls win Huron -Perth volley- ball championship by beating Stratford Northwestern in the final. MARCH .Zurich Town & Country Bowling Lanes bowlers Cory Ducharme; 'Brian Ford, Kevin Ducharme, Brent Ducharme, Chris Regier and alternate Kris Ducharme qualify for the YBC Southern Ontario Championships in Cambridge. •Ilawks forward Jeff Campbell named Morenz Division rookie of the year; Irish goaltender Mike Boyce and defence - man Jeremy Lambourn named to th'e all-star team. 'Exeter Juvenile Chiefs ousted from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association playdowns in first round by losing three games to two to New 'Hamburg. Exeter was the defending champions. The Chiefs later down Aylmer for the Southern Counties League title. •Irish thrown out of playoffs by Seaforth in first round in six games; Hawks finish Mitchell in double overtime in game six. •Exeter Adult Classiques precision skat- ing team wins gold at Sun Country competition in Chatham. The Classiques later win the Western Ontario Section title; so do the Exeter Juvenile Mini - Classics. •Huron hurricanes swimmer Melanie Culbert wins OISAA gold in 200m individual medley. •SIIDHS girls curling rink wins WOSSA 'AA' title at 'Tilisonburg beat- ing Glencoe in the final. Team members are skip Jenn Mercer, vice Laura Miller, second Melanie Urquhart, lead Brianne Webber and spare. Marilou Ilern. '•Ilensall Dynamite Novice girls hockey team wins Lambton Girls Hockey League regular season and playoff titles in their first year; Ilensall FCC junior girls win Burlington Barracuda tournament also in their first year.. •RR3 Granton's Don Beatson wins the Western Fair Raceway ,horseman of the year award; Lucan's Jack Hardy accepts horse of the year on behalf of his five-year- old Biddulph's Bad Boy. •Hawks slip by Seaforth 2-1 in thrilling game seven win at packed South Huron Rec Centre. •Exeter's Joe Fulop flicks to Ontario crokinole title, his fourth crown , since '92. •Ailsa Craig's Lindsay Thompson, 17, goes on the trip of a lifetime and rides in the South African Invitational Show Jumping, competition rep- resenting the Canadian Pony Club. APRIL •Exeter petite ringette team wins Huron -Perth 13B' title by beating. Mitchell 5-4 in overtime in the final. •Ilawks sink Port Stanley Lakers 4-1 in game seven, head to all - Ontario final series versus Wellesley. •Exeter Nabisco Atoms Ali team ' sweep Ennismore for all -Ontario title. . •Lucan Novice Lasers beat Cayuga for OMHA Panther senior boys rugby player Jeremy VanEsbroeck goes up for the line -in during a home game versus Saunders. Town & Country bowler Jen Glazier bowls 399 game, given special recognition plaque from Ontario Five - Pin Bowlers' Association. •Lucan `DD' Irish Bantams beat Mariposa for OMI1A title. -•Henall Arena hosts English women's hockey team during part of their stay in southern Ontario_ ' •Ilawks fall to Wellesley in game seven after win- ning three straight to tie the series. , •Ilawks entire coaching staff calls it quits after several successful, sea- sons. , MAY •Our Lady of. Mount Carmel School senior girls win Huron -Perth basket- ball title. •Hensall's Cara Gardner lands a spot at . the Canadian Hockey ' Association national women's team evaluation camp in Toronto after a successful first season on, the blueline with the Ivey League Brown University (Rhode Island) Bears. •SIIDHS senior boys sweep Huron and Iluron- Perth soccer titles; junior girls take the Iluron- Perth championship. •SIIDHS's Ben Forrest notches third in high jump at WOSSA track and field meet at London St. Thomas Aquinas. JUNE . •SEIDHS senior boys lose WOSSA soccer final in penalty kicks to Strathroy; juniors don't make it out of WOSSA pool play. •SIIDHS honours its top jocks: junior girl Erin. Robilliard, senior girl Lori Richardson, junior .boy Tom Phouttharath and senior boy Christian Stuckless. •Scott Bogart named Hawks head coach; he later names assistants Dave' Dalrymple and Steve, ,Matthews; Bill Brock is named G.M. JULY •Crediton's Bill McNutt wins London Crumlin Gun Cltib skeet shooting championship. •Ailsa Craig's Tom Appleton travels to the U.K. as a quarterback on the Team Canada Football Euro Tour. •Exeter's Matt Dietrich wins the Les Thomas Memorial TNT Junior Tyson Golf Tour title.
