ZURICH — Mark them
down as undecided.
At a meeting Last week
at the Hay Township mu-
nicipal office. the steer-
ing committee repre-
senting the group of six
municipalities in amal-
gamation talks was un-
able to decide on wheth-
er to expand.
The group — consisting
of Hensall. Zurich. Hay,
Bayfield. Stanley and
Tuckersmith — had re-
ceived letters from the
municipalities of Sea -
forth and McKillop re-
questing the group of six
include them in amal-
gamation talks.
While several members
of the committee, in-
cluding Hensall Reeve
Cecil Pepper, Stanley
Reeve Jack Coleman and
Zurich Coun. Marg
Holmes. said they didn't
want to "shut the door"
on expanding. no de-
cision was made by the
committee. Hay Town-
ship Reeve Jim Love said
Hay doesn't want to ex-
pand and thinks the
group should stick with
six municipalities.
The committee dis-
cussed its draft re-
structuring proposal and
decided the new mu-
nicipality will be born on
Jan. 1, 2001. The com-
mittee agreed to have its
work done by Jan. 1,
2000.. after which a tran-
sition board will make the
major decisions on the
new municipality's future.
Oiik of the transition.
boards decisions will be
personnel. The re-
structuring committee de-
cided last Wednesday that
employees of the six for-
mer municipalities will
have the first chance to
apply for the new jobs.
Also discussed was rep-
resentation on the new
municipality's council.
According to the draft.
Hay, Stanley and Tuck-
ersmith will have two
councillors each while
Hensall. Zurich and Bay-
field will have one coun-
cillor.
Zurich Coun. Holmes
argued Zurich won't have
enough representation on
the council. but Bayfield
Reeve Doug Grant said he
didn't have a problem
with the townships having
more representation on
the council.
tie added that if each of
the former municipalities
is in its own ward it can
better protect its identity.
He said the townships
have greater populations
than the villages and
should have more repre-
sentation.
Love agreed, explaining
to Holmes that flay Town-
ship has 3,300 voters.
while Zurich has 800.
The new municipality
will also have repre-
sentation on county coun-
cil, although the number
of representatives is still
to be determined. Repre-
sentatives will be elected
at large.
The committee will
meet again on Jan. 13 at
7 p.m. in the Bayfield mu-
nicipal office where it will
continue discussing the
restructuring draft.
