Steckle agrees with Martin's rejection of bank mergers
By Scott Nixon

EXETER — Huron -
Bruce MP Paul Steckle
says he supports
Federal Finance
Minister Paul Martin's
decision to reject the
proposed mergers of
four of Canada's big
banks. ..
Martin made the
announcement
Monday to reject the
two proposed mergers
between 11) Bank and
(ABC and .the Royat
Bank and Bank of
Montreal.
Steel& said mergers
may be allowed in the
future but, for now,
there are too many
unanswerod questions
surrounding the merg-
ers.
• Ile said one .major
.issue was how. the
mergers would affect
Competition, As an
example, he asked
-what would happen if
a small municipality
had only a Royal 'Bank
and a Bank of
Montreal. If the com-
panies .merged, both
branches wouldn't
stay open, said
Steckle, leaving cus-
tomers with no
options.
Steckle said the
belief that Canadian
banks have,.to merge
.in order to stay com-
petitive on the world
market is false.
"Bigness isn't always
better," he said, citing
the Bank of Japan as a
large bank that is
struggling.
Ile added popular
opinion is against the
mergers and said it's
difficult for the aver-
age person on the
street to see how bank
mergers can help cus-
tomers.
.For mergers to be a
possibility in the
future, Steckle said
the banks will have to
ensure the govern-
ment that competitive-
ness will remain.
Steckle is also con-
cerned about what will

appreciate, she says.
Smith manufactures a wide vari-
ety of traders in many sizes, .both
gooseneck and bumper pull, to
Include farmers' livestock and con-
tractors' highway dump, 11at beds,

Smith's two nevelt lines — the
horse/stock combo and the contrac-
tors high security enclosed equip-
ment and supply trailers — have a
new look with a flat` roof and an
aerodynamic nose cone to reduce
drag for better fuel consumption.
These changes have also been
incorporated into Smith's regular

"Ou.r goals at Smith are clear,"
