Secondary School Reform info
by Philip J,. McMillan
VICE-PRINCIPAL
They newspapers are filled with rel=
•erences to the Secondary Reforms
about to affect the secondary
schools ..of Ontario. These
reforms, that I will .comment
un here and next week in part
two. •are to take place as o
September 1999. The stu-
dents who will'tirst notice the
changes will be students who
are entering the Grade Nine
classes in September of 1999. 1
• hope to outline the changes -briefly
here. Get in touch with your elemen-
tary school to see when there is to be
an information night regarding these p
changes. If you have already missed s
the information night ask to get a copy t
of a pamphlet "Secondary Reform" in
sent home with your child. My articles
• will use this. pamphlet as a source with
less detail than the actual pamphlet.
The. diploma requirements are as fol-
lows. Students will be required to
have 18 compulsory courses, 12
optional credits, 40 hours of communi-
ty service across four years, -and suc-
cessful completion of the grade 10 lit-
eracy test. This literacy test will be
province wide. The curriculum will be
designed as a four year system. The
emphasis will be on language, math
and science. Full disclosure of all
grade -11 and 12 transcripts begins
enter a "destreamed" grade nine class.
Students fn grades 9 and •1O will have
two. choices. They may take courses in .
applied .or academic Studies. Some
subjects will be considered "open in
optional areas of study.. ;These courses
will prepare. students for their grade
• ten studies in either level. It
should be noted that a student'
who elects to 'take an applied
math in year one is not pre-
vented from selecting an acade-
mic math in year two. The dif-
lerence between the two course
levels" is in addressing how the stu-
dent . le'arns. The students who
approach studies in applied•studies
will study the material, focused on the
ractical application of the materials
tudied. Those who select studies in
he acadettlic area will cover core
aterial with a focus on theory and
enriched activities. • There will also be
transfer courses available at the,grade
AO, 11, and 12 level to prepare a stu-
dent who elects to change levels from
one track to another.
1 will continue next week to discuss
other features that will be. part of the
Secondary School Reforms. Mr. Craig ,
Head of our Student Services arra at
St. Anne's and I, will be in all Huron
County Elementary Schools in early
January. Check your school .newslet-
ters to get ¢dual dates. • We will host
an information night on January 25, to
saver questions and, allow students
see our campus and all that it will
er. Parents of students at St. Anne's
are asked to watch for a newsletter to
sent home in early January with all
month's events and some interest -
bits cif' information for the month
September 1999. That means the stu,- to
dent transcript will show all attempts off
at gaining a credit . Students who
repeat a course to upgrade or to pass. ,be
after a second attempt will have, as , the
part of their transcript, a citation for ing
each,attempt.
Students will no longrer '
