An artful look at Canada
Cost to Coast -at Ausable. -London artist Johan. Brasse straightens his.painting 'Sas-
katchewan' at the Ausable Centre in Lucan during his exhibit there that opened with a re-
ception Friday night.. The painting is part of Brasse's 'Coast to Coast Collection' that runs at
the Ausable Centre til! Sept. 30. The Ausable Centre is•:open Monday -Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Brasse's exhibition includes the -pointillism technique paintings in the 'Coast to Coast Col-
lection' as well as some, of his sculptures and, examples of his newer puristic expres-
- siohism paintings. The 'Coast to Coast' paintings are 'meant to show the "greatness and
vastness of Canada' according to Brasse. "1 wanted a series and what better way to es-
tablish one than to take the provinces?" The Ausable Centre exhibition is Brasse's first. He
hopes to become an artist in residence at a t3ermuda gallery this winter.

Horror at the movies

Orr Saturday night my .favorite

Last night lily wife. Ella and `1

superb, alive star rating with top
mails from all of the movie crit:
ics. How could 'we go wrong:" So
we lined up .for our tickets an
hour before and waited for- the.
show to begin.
The manager suddenly
appeared at the front of the. audi-
toriudi to make an announce-
ntent.The movie had .graphic:,
grotesque material and if we
• found it disturbing within the first
20 minutes our money would be
refunded: There was some light
nervous laughter as we tried to
prepare ourselves for the great
unknown.
it did not take long for the gore
and - guts. to be graphically'por-
trayed, the fighting at Omaha
Beach showed the horrendous
Toss of life and limb that the
young men went through:
First was a young man who lost
his arm ,and went back to retrieve
its and.this was followed try hun-
dreds of gut wrenching images of
boys being killed in the water and
on the beaches. the manager lied
when he told 'as that the .first few
minutes was to be our trial of fire.
The entire show was filled with
images of explicit decapitations
and disemhowclments with all of
the evils -and horrors of 'war
.thrown in for .gobd measure. At
times colic's only salvation was to
shut your eyes and hope that the
graphic scenes ,would quickly
pass but sadly the horrors
endured. The ordeal lasted nearly
three hours and. at the end a
,woman beside me wiped her eyet
and told her friend that she was
exhausted. -The capacity crowd
exited the theatre quickly without
a. word spoken'. Ella -and 1 sat
'deathly still watching the credits
trying to compose ourselves and'
bring' forth some furor of reason
to the madness we had ,just
viewed. Why .. did Steven
Spielberg; the recipieni-of an
Academy Award for the recount
of the -holocaust in "Schindler's
List", subject his audience; to
another horrific. -film? It soul did
not glamorize war or make one
wantio serve one's country to the
. hope of1eing a hero. There was,
Only pain and death for the

Spiclherg. The movie is not meant
to be enjoyable. there is no fun,
only the horrors of war. Those
that think that war is a maker of
sten and tester of the mettle in our_
youth should see the filet and take
nuts that war is not like the lies
depicted'in the Hollywood filets
with John Wayne. "We don't do
anything that makes this look
glamorous or cool..." The movie
is an accuratevivid Mirror story
of young Wren lighting to survive
that hopefully will never need to
he repeated. There isa prayer for
peace that seems appropriate,
"May we see the .day when war
alta bloodshed cease, when a
great_ peace will -embrace the
whole world. 'Then pinion will not
threaten nation, and ;nankin(' will
not again know war."
"Most men look at things.as
they are and `wondc_r Why. i
dream of things that never were,
and ask Why nut?"
