Sunbeams resume this week
Blooming winners.
Flowery reward. Lucan council handed over prizes to winners. in its Communities In Bloom
garden tour at last week's. meeting. Pictured are; from left: Fred and Brenda Smith (best
back. yard), -Reeve Robert Benner, .Cathy Appleman; (overall Winner, husband Aaron absent),
councillor Perry ,Caskanette, Richard Strong (best front yard, wife Colleen absent), Deputy
Reeve Harry Wraith and Kelly and Barry Hodgins (most appropriate land use). Also absent
were best vegetable garden winners Jim and Donna Freeman and most appropriate land use
winners (tie)_Bruce and Deb Grant. Wraith and his wife Barb were given an honorable -men-
tion for their property while Lions Parkview Place also garnered an honorable mention.
Wraith and Ceskanette were the driving force behind Lucan entering and participating in
Communities In. Bloom. Each contest category winner receives a $200 gift certificate to
Nicholson Garden Centre.
A new additon to Brothers/Big Sisters
services the in -school mentoring program

implemented a new- program*: to
support children in -need within
South Huron and northern Grand
-Bend and Middlesex areas.
-Far 1oo many•children become
discouraged at an early age and
never acquire the Self-confidence
needed to achieve their full poten-.
• tial. --Many stop trying in elementary
-school and drop out of high school
before completing their diploma. A
better education leads to better
opportunities for children later in
Iife.•The in --School Mentoring
Program provides service to chit-
dren..-from single and dual parent
homes. --
The In -School Mentoring pro-
gram: -a one-to-one relationship
between a student and an -adult vol-
unteer;- requires that the volunteer
and student •meet for one hour each
week during school hours, -at the
. child's school for the duration of
thc school year; has a goal to help
the child develop the self-esteem to
meet the challenges of school and
life: provides. screening, training
and support for the adult Mentors
arranges matches between the stu-.
. dent and mentor, based on mutual
interests.
. The children: are elementary
school students from seven to 1.1
years of age who would benefit
from a cmc -to -one relationship with
a -caring adult; need encouragement
to help them learn to feel good •
about themselves.

barbecue

Baker, Don Baker, Ken and Marg
Baker aftcnded the annual Schilbe
Bccf barbecue which was held at
Bayfield on August 27 with 125 in '
attendance. Don Wurm and friend,
and Robert and Jcan Wurm, of
Sehawaing.. Michigan, nephews of
Emma Schilbe also attended.
Last weekend, Earl and June
Rader bahysat two of their grand-
children Russel) and Rosalie Rader
of Barrie arca, while the children's
parents David and -Julie attended a
wedding in New York.
Mabel Fraser celebrates a birth-
day this week.
Hugh and Anne Morenz have
had their grandchildren Persephone
and Christian from Vancouver with
them for a week of holidays. They
enjoyed atrip to St. Jacobs and
went to the Huron Country
Playhouse to see 42nd Street.
Persephone had recently travelled
to Europe for a month and they
spent time seeing her pictures and
hearing of her travels through
Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
Italy and Greece.
On the evening of August 29.
Annie and Hugh Moroni s grand-
children held a. birthday party in
their honor for their 80th and for
Bill's 50th.
The mentor: is a friend, not a
tutor; is anyone in•'the community,
including - business people, skilled
trades' and _craftspeople seniors,
homemakers; members of service
clubs, co-op students 18 years, of
age and over; is an advocate to
encourage lite -lung learning. ' '

Carter was in charge of the first fall
church service on Sunday morning
at Elimville. •
After the singing of the lntrl it,
Rev.'Carter gave greetings and the
announcements and the Cail to
Worship.
The Prayer of Approach was
given by the minister and the
Prayer of Confession taken from
the Service Book was said in uni-
son. Rev. .Carter lit the Christ
Candle and everyone.said the two
lines in unison.
The minister told the youth a
story "Celebrating Summer and A
New Beginning".
The choir sang"As I Walk With
His Hand in Mine" accompanied
by pianist Jcan Hodgert.
The responsive reading -was
taken from the service book. Rev.
Carter mad the scriptures and her
'sermon was entitled. "Much
Obliged". `Janis and Lori
Richardson received the offering as
well as being the greeters. Janis
Richardson wheeled the Cart of gro-
ceries. for thc Food' Bank w the
front.
The closing hymn "How Firm A
Foundation" was sung and every- -
one repeated the Commissioning
and the Bencdiction.and the choral
Amen. -
Coming events
On September 13 at Thames
Road -at 9:45 a.m. the service will
celebrate the Sunday School and
the marriage vows of.8ill and
• Rhoda Rohde in honor of their 50th
- wedding anniversary and congrega-
tion covenanting with God. Sunday
School will resume this Sunday.
Church services will be at
Elimville September 20; Thames -
Road September 27.
Sunbeams will- meet at Thames
Road on September 10 from 9:30 to
11:30 a.m. Moms and children ages
birth to senior kindergarten are
welcome: Please bring a picture of
each child to fit a frozen juice can
lid and a. glue gun.- There will be
Bible stories, songs,'crafts. fellow-
ship and fun. The'regular date for
each meeting will be the firs(

The Reconstruction Committee
will meet at. Thames Road church
at 7:30 p.m. on September 16. -

• the Excter Fall Fair "Harvest
Celebration will be at the Rec.
Centre at 9:45 a.m. .Guest speaker
will he Kevin Stewart. Special
inusic will also be featured. The
offering will be presented to the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
Following the service from 11 a.m.
to l p.m. a Sunday Brunch is being
served by the Centralia United
Church Sunday _School families,
