Grand Bend man
complains about
load limits
Council grants farmer
exemption on load limit
GRAND BEND. — Gill Road
resident Keith Gill asked council
'tit its Aug. J7 why an attempt by
council to pass a reduced load
limit _on the road scented to tic
specifically aimed at harming
him. :
Gill's complaints caused coun-
cil to reserve a decision on a by:
law and a committee of the whole
meeting will be held. to decide on
the matter. ,
• concerned .about what
you'.re -doing to Keith.. Gill and
you're only. doing it to • Keith
Gill,"Gill said to council.
Gill, who said he has. lived on
the road for 60 years. challenged
.council because their proposed
bylaw would limit truck loads to
5,000 kilograms per axle on Gill
Roast between Main Street East
and the GUI Road turnaround.
The load limit is designed to pro-
tect the road's surface: ,
if passed. Girl said the:bylaw
would prevent hirn from• ever
farting_his land. as farm equip-
ment exceeds .the proposed Toad
limit. - •
-"Phis to :me is • really detri-
mental to niy business. it's a -big
concern." he said.
Cour.' Phil Maguire asked Gill
if he would'bc satisfied if council
granted him an exemption for ag
ricultural vehicles. Gill agreed an
exemption.would be satisfactory._
Council invited Gill to attend
their next committee of the whole
meeting.
Grand Bend company awarded Japanese contract
GRAND BEND — There will
soon be a local flavor in Yoko-
hama, Japan, as Grand • Bend'. s
House of Flags was recently con=
traded to make 44 nags for the
130th Anniversary of the Yoko-
hama Country Athletic Club.
The contract with the Yokohama
Country Athletic Club is the House
of Flags'. first international contract.
Owner Pete Haist says a friend of
1):s in Japan dropped tiff.a }louse of
-Flags brochure at the ,country club
and after -checking out Haist's Web
site, the country .club decided to
award him the contract.
• The country .club has ap-
. proximately 2,000 memhers and,
according to Haist, offers a place
- for westerners living in Japan to
speak English and enjoy their west-
ern cutturc.
Houseof Flags has been in busi-
ness for -13 years, the first 12 in
Forest. Haist says his ,location on
•Ontario Street in Grand Bend offers
him more space and. a ;better mar-
ket.
One reason Haist says he was
awarded the contract is • because
House of Flags is willing to do any
• order, no matter how small; he said
a lot- of companies probably
wouldn't want a contract _worth
only -44 nags.
Haist des -critics himself as "pretty
excited" about the contract, ex-
plaining that he's never sent iris.
.products overseas before. He's hop-
ing the 'Yokohama contract is a foot

Lockyer closing shop after 52 years
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
LUCAN — Jim Lockyer. - has
spent more than -his fair share in the
shop.
• In fact, Lockyer. 75. has hogged
over 52 years at his Lucan machine
shop: The business and its equip-
ment will be auctioned today.
Lockyer opened the shop after he
returned from serving four - years
overseas in the Canadian •arrny in
the Second World War. He saw
time in France, Germany, Belgium
and Holland as an armored car and
truck driver:'
- His marriage to Bernice dates -
•back almost as long as the shop: he
opened in February 1946 and he
and Bernice tied the knot in' June
• 1946.
- Over the years a lot has changed
in the world. Lockyer said the
biggest -.change'• was' going from
horsedrwn ' equipment to power
.driven motors. •
But some tliings haven't changed
that..much.including one of the
mainstays of his business: sharp=.'
ening those harvesting knives.
Though not much of a joiner,
Lockyer - has silently helped out
many Lucan-arca community or-
ganizations through, his shop and
his building expertise.
'Lockyer smiled when asked
.what's kept him coming to the shop
all these years...
"My wife says it's stuhhornness,"
he said. "i've had a desire for it• 1
guess. 1 didn't know anything

Lockyer said that's up to. who you

"i've had people ask nre.how to

• Lockyer didn't know what 10 say

"That"s my • problem," he

Lockyer knows the. first . few

"You're cutting your life off," he

Lockyer has a few things to say
