EXETER Instead of just
looking for the ideal summer' job,
Exeter area resident Glenn Haines
.decided to create one. ..
Haines, 21, is a science student
at the University. of Western On-
tario and like everyone else his age,
-he's looking to make some extra
money to help- bankroll .his educa-
tion. .
He recently • started Signature
Carriage, a wedding carriage busi-
ness; with his friend Ted Hoffman
from Dashwood. -
"You always meet nice people. at
weddings so I thought this would
be a great way to make money."
said Haines.
The pieces soon fell together -set-
ting up the only carriage business
of this kind in the area.
Haines estimates he has spent
$8,000 purchasing two Clydesdale,
pintocross horses (Bert and Prince)
and a hunter green and white Vic-
torian Surry carriage from a com-
pany in Si. Thomas. - .
He .had help training. the Cly-
desdales, from his ' neighbor and
horse trainer. Wilmer Presczator:
Haines also practiced riding his
buckboard wagon to prepare him-
self for the job (watch • for. Haines
riding his buckboard wagon in the
Exeter Rodeo parade):

ready appeared in one wedding
show in Blyth and they are plan

ning to appear in others.
- Signature Carriage offers driver
and footman red carpet service,
champagne and transportation ca-
tered to the wedding party's needs.
- Haines said -their carriage service
will also strive to work closely'with
`thephotographer and florist.
Signature Carriage's first ,; job -
was driving Kathy and John MacL-
ean for their wedding in=Exeter on
Friday afternoon. ..
Haines knew a member of the
-wedding party and offered' the ser-
vice free of charge. .

The Bottom Line:
Summer jobs can be a great. way
for students to earn some money
while gaining valuable work expe
rience. However, any job loses its
worth when health and safety arc
put at risk. In order to ensure the
safety of employees and employers,
there • are health, and safety stan-
dards that We should all pay atten-
tion to this summer.
The Occupational Health and -
Safety act sets the 'minimum ages
for employment to protect you
from unsafe working conditions:
- • 18 years of age for window
cleaning , -
• 18 years of age to serve liquor
• 16 years of age for construction
jobs_
-- • 15 years of age for factory work
• 14 years in all-other.workplaces
Employers are responsible • for
providing a safe; working environ-
ment and training to new .employ-
ees. You must receive "Workplace
Hazardous Materials Information
'System" (WHMIS) training if you
are likely to be exposed to hazard-
ous materials like 'chlorine bleach,
cleaning agents, and solvents. Re-•
member, you have the right to re-
fuse, unsafe work and your employ-
.er cannot fire you for refusing
unsafe work.
" Employees also have responsibil-
ities set out by the Act. These re-
sponsibilities include: using: or
wearing any equipment provided
by the employer; reporting any
missing, broken or defective equip-
- ment or hazards in the workplace;
and not participating in _pranks or
horseplay, or the dangerous use of
equipment. •
The Employment Standards Act
is set up to ensure that employees
and . employers follow established
employment rules. The Ontario
minimum wages as set out by the
act state That the hourly rate•is:, .

Grand Bend council
strongly opposes
North Lambton
proposal
GRAND BEND — Council
wants nothing to do with the North
Lambton Restructuring Proposal,• .
The issue of the proposal arose
during Grand Bend's July 20 meet-
ing, during which Conn. Bob'Mann
- called the proposal a "takeover pro-
posal" and said.should restructuring
happen,- every municipality in-
volved will- save money -except
Grand Bend. '
The other main municipalities in-
' volved in the restructuring proposal
arc Bosanquet, Forest, Thedford
and Atkona..
As a result, council passed a mo-
tion stating -it ';most strenuously"
oppose the North Lambton Re-
structuring Proposal because the
proposal is not in the best interests
of the Grand Bend residents or res- '
idents of North • Bosanquet who
consider themselves part of the
greater Grand Bend area.
Mann said taxes ,in Grand Bend
will rise 11 per cent if the 'Bend is
included in restructuring and said
the other municipalities involved in
the .restructuring simply want
Grand Bend involved for the vil-
lage's tax dollars.
• "We find the whole proposal a
reprehensible piece of legislation,"
Manh said, labelling the other four
main municipalities involved as
bullies for attempting to get Grand
Bend involved.
As an example of how the Grand
Bend area would suffer under the
restructuring proposal, Mann said
residents in North Bosanquet now
pay 33 per cent of the Town of Bd-
sanquet's total taxes but only re-
ceive nine per cent of the town's
spending.
He said similar inequities would
occur to Grand Bend if the City of
North Lambton proposal comes to
fruition. ,
