EXETER Bob and Ruth Smith Came all the way from England to • see what's in our belfry. The Smiths travelled from•Perby, England to survey Trivitt Memorial . Anglican •Church's 108 -year-old hells on July 9. The couple are part owner;: of • Eayre & Smith Limited. one of the few companies in the world that deals in hcllhanging-.and •.restora= tion; The :Smith's. trip to Exeter was just one of the.. many stops they have , made on their trip. across North America -this summer sur- veying church hill. • They arrived in the U.S. on June 27 • and have made stops in South Carolina, Oregon and Oaklahoma. In Canada. in addition to Exeter. they've visited Si. Paul's Cathedral in London and Holy- Trinity in Thornhill. . • While in Exeter, the Smiths spent a fea hours looking at the condi non of the church's bells. They assessed the bell lower and bells by • taking detailed notes and measurements. They also video-.. taped the premises. to aid .them: in developing a final repos. . __ -They will then send their rec- iimmendations and quote hack 11) the church. _ • They will also include. advice•on restorations that can be done local- . ly that will help cut costs. Bob' Smith expects that Trivitt's_. bells .wilt have to he sent to. their shop in England to be restored. In their last budget. Trivitt Church members approved funds . fora bell restoration project. • The Smiths donate their - pro- fessional lime and even pay for their transatlantic flight. They only ask that churches they work for pick up their travelling and accommodation expenses while there. • Bob Smith has been in the bell hanging business for 20 -years. Be- -. fore that he was a mechanical en: gineer.. • He was'drawn to the trade partly because of his 40 -year experience as a bell ringer. "My work is a combination of ex- perience with professional qual- ifications," he said. The Smiths • were met at Trivitt . Memorial by -church -member and tower -captain Kevin Love.
