Plowing Match chair urges
North Huron involvement
By Breads Burke
The most challenging task in orga-
nizing the 1999 International
.Plowing Match. is motivating all of
Huron County to get involved.
Thisis the opinion of IPM
Chairperson Graeme Craig, who
•gave an IPM update to participants
of a May 27 Wingham and Area
Chamber of Commerce meeting
with the theme, Agriculture and
Tourism - Growing Together.
Craig claims although "it sounds a
long way off to Dashwood," the
gigantic event requires 35 commit-
tees as well as an estimated 1,000
people and $ 1.4 million.
"We need some participation from
the. north third of the county," he
says, pointing out "the economic
impact .is probably 70 miles from
where the activity is."
Although the event is named the
IPM and Farm Machinery Show;'
Craig claims it is more accurately
described as a "Huron County show-
case." -
"We have to provide a show that's
not all agriculturally based," he
stressed. "Not everyone wants to buy
a $200,000 combine."
Craig says although agriculture is
an extremely important aspect of the
match, he feels it's "more exciting"
to reflect a cross-section of interests.
He refuses to estimate the number
of people expected to show at the
match, yet admits there is space for
20,000 cars and 600 buses each day
of the event. .
According to Craig, the first day of
the plowing match is traditionally a
well -attended one, with interest lev-
elling out through the week and gain-
ing momentum towards the week-
end. FPM organizers hope to keep
attendance level throughout the
event.
• IPM events •
A commemorative IPM compact
disc will be released in the fall and
Vama is hosting a kick-off barbecue
in October when the match is exactly
one year away.
Also planned is a Machines in
Motion -display that features both
modern and antique farm machinery.'
"We've dedicated 192 acres to four
crops that will be harvested, tilled
and re -seeded during the five-day
event," says Machines in Motion
Chairperson John Becker in a public-
ity committee press release. "We
intend to provide an opportunity to
see the very latest agricultural tech-
nology operating in its own environ-
ment."
A Back to the Future contest will
give stridents a chance to depict their
vision of agriculture in the year
2049,
"We dare to be different," says.
Craig. "We try to keep an interest
level and it's been•going pretty.
well."
Also on the agenda'is a soup com-
petition at annual fairs throughout
the county. The champion soup will
become the Soup of the Match, to be
featured on plowing match menus
and possibly as a promotional prod-
uct. Rules are available at local agri-
cultural societies.
As well, the IPM needs musical
groups to perforin • in opening and
closing parades. Contact Paul

Romantic comedy is Blyth's `almost premiere'
BLYTH - When Yesteryear, by
Joanna McCeltand Glass premiered
in Toronto in 1989, the Toronto
Sun's review • began with "Get set
to laugh!" and ended with, "Short-
en winter.•.go!"
Robert Crew of the Toronto Star
wrote: "Yesteryear is the funniest
Canadian play to_debut, in many a
year. -It's the sort of well -crafted,
old fashioned comedy 'that strikes
an immediate cord with the audi-
ence and keeps them laughing
throughout."
Blyth Festival artistic director
Anne Chislett was in the audience
that ffrsf opening night. She loved
the play and recommended it to the
then artistic director of Blyth. How
.ever, the first version of Yesteryear
caile4 for pot ,one, but two huge
sets,,and,.bad a cast that made pro-
duction costs prohibitive. Still, for
nine years Chislett dreamed of
bringing Yesteryear to the Blyth
stage and the Blyth audience.
The dream 'will come true on
June 26, when a brand .new version
of Yesteryear, re -invented- for the
Blyth Festival, opens the 1998 sum-
mer season. The second opening of
this sunny comedy has already at-
tracted major interest across Cana-
da. The National Arts Centre in Ot-
tawa and the Manitoba Theatre
Centre both invested funds in
Blyth': pre -production workshop
of the show. -
Yesteryear is set in small town
Saskatchewan in .1948 and tells the
story of David McTavish, a humble
house painter who has- carried a
torch for his lost love, . Mildred
Douglas, for 15 years. David lives
in the back room of --Howard's
Hardware Store, a clubby place
where the town brass gatherfor a
drink and .a gossip everyday after
work. Everything changes on the
miraculous day when David wins
the Irish Sweepstakes and Mildred
comes back to town.
The Blyth production of Yester-
year stars Jane Spidell and Ross
Manson as the reunited lovers, with
Blyth associate artist Jerry Franken
as the 'senior statesman' of the
town. The talents of Michelle Fisk,
Sharon Bakker, Michael Healey,
Ari Cohen, Tom Hauff, Eric Coates
and Jason Rumley round out the ex-
ceptional cast.
Curtain time for the 'almost pre-
miere' performance of Yesteryear
is 8 p.m. and the opening night ex-
citement will continue after the
show- as the Festival hosts a post -
performance reception in the Lower
Hall - a wonderful opportunity for
theatre patrons to meet the cast and
crew of the production.
Thursday's gala opening will
kick-off a stellar season of Canadi-
an plays on the Main Stage - at
Blyth. -Wilbur County Blues, by
- Andrew Moodie. Blyth's second
'offering of the summer, opens July
2 followed by Thirteen Hands by
Carol Shields on July 3() and Keith
Roulston's Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! on
August 6. .

In celebration of the. opening
Yesteryear, the Blyth Festival •is
looking for local stories of romance
and reunited love. If you have such
astory, write it down and send it to
the Festival at Box 10 Blyth, Onta-
rio, NOM I HO.
-We'll read all the stories we re-
ceive. by candle light, and will
award a prize for the most roman-
tic. The tales of love must be true
and must include your name, ad-1
dress and telephone number. Win-
ners will be announced later•in the
summer. '
