Leg Injury may mean end of line TORONTO — Exeter native Jack Darling may have to close the book on the promising career of a harness pacer he trains and co- owns. Pearl River Matt injured his left leg during the $ I million North America Cup at Woodbine Raceway on Saturday. Darling, (row of Windsor, said he fears the injury may be a break to the coffin bone, the same injury that occurred in a race at Lexington, Ky., last September that sidelined the pacer the rest of the '97 season. Pearl River Matt entered Saturday's race, Canada's richest har- ness race, as the third favorite. The race was won by Straight Path driven by Mike Lachance. Darling said the horse looked fine at the start and was fifth at the three-quarter mark. He thinks the pacer injured the leg during the final turn. Pearl River Matt finished eighth out of 10 despite the injury. Ailsa Craig's John Campbell missed winning his fifth straight Cup as Pearl River Matt's driver. Darling said his horse looked good prior to Saturday's race since he began training in January. He won't know if the injury is a career -ender till X-rays are completed and assessed after press. "If it's broken we'll talk to the vets and see what our options are," Darling said. Darling and partner Dan Smith of Dorchester won last year's Cup with Gothic Dream. — with files from the London Free Press. ,1 SUNRISE DRIVING RANGE y AND PRACTICE FACILITIES OpeningJuly 1st Door Prizes Highway #4 1 km.
