Cents back on right track
LONDON —' The Exeter Cen-
tennials regained their defensive
form in London on Sunday for a 2-
1 victory .of Benfica Bin Western
Ontario -Soccer League Division 11
action.
Cents • keeper/spokesperson
George McEwan said tighter man-
to-man marking was the key to the
win since the strikers hada tough
time getting good shots away de-
spite having many great chances.
The first half ended in a scoreless
tic though Exeter carried the play
with their forward pairings earning
super scoring opportunities. Tony
VanDenHeuvel fed the ball to Er-
nie Stabo for two good chances but
the Benfica keeper came up big
both times. Dave Farquhar was giv-
en a couple of good feeds by Luke
Sims, but had a tough time keeping
his shots below the crossbar.
The second half began with the
Cents still controlling the play.

Their efforts finally paid off about
20 minutes into the half when Mark
Brintnell took Mark Lynn's pass,
beat one defender and blew the ball
past the charging keeper to give Ex-
eter the 1-0 lead.
Benfica stormed right back and
tied the game.
Sims settled the score for the
Cents in the 85th minute when he
took advantage of Farquhar's effort
that had pulled the Benfica keeper
out of his net and then laid the ball
into the six-yard box with no one
around but Sims.
The Cents carry their 5-3 record
to London on Friday evening for a
game versus Scottish.

weekend than the scoreboard tells
the talc.
•
The women split their two
weekend games, a 2-1 home. win
on Sunday over Rebellion and a
3-1 loss at St. Columhan.
Exeter played Sunday's -game
shorthanded from the start with
no substitutions. Despite the lack
of depth, Exeter played a strong
passing game taking advantage of
open space and conserving' their
energy when possible.
Exeter's Helen Thcophilopoulas
opened up the scoring late in the
first half.
Midway through the second half
the fatigue started to get to Exctcr
and London tied the score.
