Spanish Fiesta
On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 27th, Ms.
Heatherington's Spanish classes got together In the school
cafeteria for a Spanish fiesta. The 2A class had spent the week
and a half before the fiesta preparing for the event. Pinatas
were made in class, and authentic cultural dishes were made
by the class, to be served on the 27th.
On the day of the fiesta, all students participating were
allowed the entire afternoon to participate in the fiesta. We
began with the food, which was absolutely delicious. There
were many items there that I have never seen or tasted before,
and I didn't hesitate to try one. 1 wasn't disappointed. After we
finished eating, we cleaned all of the food from the cafeteria.
Once the cafeteria was back in order, Ms. Heatherington
brought out her Spanish song books, and we sang a few songs.
The older students set an example for the younger ones, teach-
ing actions which the younger students had been hesitant to
try earlier.
After a short break, we all went outside with a number of dif-
ferent pinatas, with the intent of breaking them. Each was
filled with all kinds of candy. The person hitting the pinata was
given hints as to where the pinata was In the air by shouting
"BAJO!" (lower) or "ARRIBAi" (higher)
It was a wonderful, fun experience for all of the students. It
gave us a small taste of Spanish culture.

My day as a Junior Snowbird
by Ben Parsons
Grade 9, SHDHS
As you all might know. the Snowhirds arc Canada's flying sensations sta-
tioned in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. For Air Expo '98. (held on June 3rd),
22 students from 22 different schools were designated to he Junior
Snowhirds for the day. I was selected to represent South Huron.
On Ihc morning of the Air Expo we walked around the career fair which
consisted of career opportunities in aviation. After exploring these displays.
we headed to the planes where we mei the pilots and the technicians of the
planes: We had anorpporlunily to sec where everything is in the plane and
even had a chance to sit in the pilots' scat. and find out what the many hut -
tons and gauges do.
Our lunch break consisted of eating with the Snowhirds and we wcrc ahlc
to talk to them personally. After lunch we went hack outside to watch the
Snowhirds in action in a V.I.P. location as they performed their show. At the
end of the day, all of the Junior Snowhirds wcrc given a Snowbird hat and a
set of gold wings stating their name and that they were a Junior Snowbird.
June 3rd. was a great. interesting, and intriguing day during which I
learned a lot more about aviation. teamwork, and just how to have a great
time. I will always remember and will he grateful to the Snowhirds for
showing me such a great day. 1 also hope that in the future other kids get the
chance to have an amazing experience with the Snowhirds just like 1 had.
The students and staff of SHDHS would like Io thank Mr. Macleod for his
hard work and dedication in helping organize Air Expo '98. His countless
hours of work ensured that students enjoyed an extremely educational experi-
ence on lune 3rd. His efforts arc greatly appreciated.
Ben Parsons was chosen to be South Huron's Junior
Snowbird.

"Behind the Scenes": cast of
Blood Relations tells all
by Sherry Cassell
As the school year draws to a close, I decided to reflect on one of the
memorable events at SHDHS this past semester --our school play. Most, if
not all people who went to see Blood Relations would agree that it was an
amazing production. i decided to find out a little more about the actors
behind the characters. Here's what I found out.
. My first question was, why did they decide to become involved with the
school play? All actors said that it had something to do with their love of
acting. Rob Turner told me that he had a lifelong love of drama , and that
was his reason for auditioning for Blood Relations. Vanessa Laye said that,
besides her interest in the arts, she is a really
outgoing person, and she enjoys the thrill of
performing in front of an audience.
Most of the cast members
said that the best part of
doing Blood Relations was
the people they worked with.
Sarah Vermunt commented that
the best part for her, was
going to the Sears Festival
where both she and
Vanessa Laye won
awards. Darryl Romphf
told nie that he liked the chance to test his acting ability.
The entire cast was extremely pleased with the overall performance.
Sarah Vermunt said, I didn't t know it would turn out so well. It couldn't
have been better.
Rob Turner added, "If anyone told me that they weren't pleased with
the performance, they were lying!"
"Being a part of this cast was a wonderful experience for me", .said
Keriann 0 Rourke. "I had the pleasure to work with people that I have
never worked with before and with people I have worked with numerous
times throughout my drama experiences in high school".
While some cast members felt that the overall' support of the production
was good, most felt that the attendance proved again that our school needs
to demonstrate more support of the arts.
Nearly all of the cast members have appeared in earlier productions at
South Huron. From The Variety Show, for Rob Turner, to last year s Listen
To The Wind, for Vanessa Laye, Kristina Cowell, Keriann 0 Rourke,
Darryl Romphf and Sarah Vermunt. Kristina was in Horseplay, and all
members of the cast participated in class productions while they were
studying drama. All of this experience proves they are seasoned
performers.
Kristina and Vanessa have demonstrated their abilities in church pro-
ductions. Vanessa and Keriann have been involved with the Huron Country
Playhouse. While Ryan Gibson was unavailable for comment, it should be
noted that he gave a convincing and humorous portrayal of Harry . As this
is his debut acting role, I can only imagine that his talent will serve him
well should he choose to continue to explore drama bcyond high school.
WhenI asked the cast members if they saw theatre as part of their
future, the responses were varied. Kristina told me that her desire is to be a
drama teacher, and to be involved in the arts as a career.
Vancssa's desire is to be in television broadcasting. The drama classes
that she has taken in high school will help her towards this career goal.
Kerriann hopes to pursue acting in university and comp Icte a double major
including drama.
On a different path, Darryl Romphf said that his first love is music but
that if a chance came up (to be involved in theatre] i would think about it.
It's a possibility.
Sarah Vermunt told me that she would like to include theatre in her
future, but she hasn't decided yet what career choices are ahead for her.
Rob in turn, commented that he is looking more towards visual arts
because he believes that theatre is not a financially productive career to
follow. He added that he would still like to stay connected to theatre in the
future.
-
it would appear that all of the members of the cast enjoyed the experi-
ence that drama at South Huron has provided for them. While their enthu-
siasm is contagious, it would be to the community's and the school's
advantage if there was more support of these talented young people.
We look forward to hearing more about Vanessa (Lizzie/ actor friend),
Kristina (Mrs. Borden), Rob (Mr. Borden), Sarah (Lizzie/ Bridget), Daryl
(Lawyer/ Mr. Patrick) and Ryan (Harry) as they follow their chosen educa-
tional and career paths.
One final note, no play becomes this good, without the diligent help of a
dedicated director.
As Kerriann said, Ms. Jantzi worked really hard to make this play work
and was wonderful at encouraging us.
And so this year's play went off without a hitch...well almost. Now the
cast moves forward sure to take what they have learned into their experi-
ences on new stages. Their talent deserves to be showcased, break a peg!
