June 15, 1988 - At Friday's
assembly at South Huron Dis-
trict High School, Said Os-
man was called to the stage to
receive a prestigious certifi-
cate of achievement from sci-
ence teacher Joe Jankowski
for placing in the 96 percen-
tile in a Chem -News exam
competition which received
6,000 entries from students in
Canada, the U,S. and Great
,,Britain. Other SHDHS stu-
dents whose marks were
above the provincial average
in the competition were Janet
Van Esbroeck, 91 percentile;
David Josephson, 88 and Ma-
rie DeBruyn, 75.
A number of Exeter Hawks
players received special
awards at the junior hockey
team's annual banquet. They
were George Pratt, Jeff Pfaff,
Jeff Reid, Jim Lewis, Jeff An-
sems, Scott Lovie, Mark Mor-
rissey and Terry Casey.
Jane Papple was crowned
Queen of the Hensall Spring
Fair Friday night by - last
year's winner, Beth Sweeney.
Dianne Hamilton was this
year's runnerup. Calves
owned by Peter Ryan and Jeff
Gemmell won the calf club
grand championship and re-
serve, respectively.

June 15, 1978 - Dr. Garnet
Leitch of Zurich is the new
chairman of the board of di-
rectors of South Huron Hospi-
tal. Leitch succeeds' retiring
chairman Carf Cann.
The Exeter Agricultural So-
ciety recently honored Mrs.
Harry Dougall for outstanding
service to the fair board.
40 YEARS AGO
June 17, 1958 - The mass
production poultry building
on the Alcantuc farm west of
Exeter on Highway 83 is rap-
idly taking shape. The struc-
ture which will house 10,000
• turkey broilers or 20,000
chicken broilers is 384 feet by
56 feet with no windows.
Rev. Alex Rapson of Main
Street United Church has ac-
cepted a call to Hyatt Avenue
United Church in London.
Rev. H.J. Snell of Exeter,
who has been president of the •
London Conference of the
United Church during the past
year presented the staff of of-
fice and chairman's gavel to
his successor, Rev. Gorson
W. Butt of Windsor when the
four day annual meeting in
Chatham drew to a close.

June 16, 1953 - Huron
County Council let a $348,472
contract to Ellis -Don Limited
of London, for the 64 -bed ad-
dition and renovation of the
Huron County Home.
Kirkton born Ward Allen,
28, was chosen grand champi-
on fiddler at the Championship
Fiddlers' contest held in the
Hensall arena, Friday night be-
fore an estimated crowd of
1,200.
55 YEARS
June 17, 1943 - Wednesday
the ladies of the Exeter branch
of the Red Cross met in the
kitchen of James Street United
Church and made 104 pounds
of strawberry jam. In a few
days they will be making
gooseberry jam. Conveners are
Mrs. Wib Martin, Mrs. L. Kyle
and Miss Laura Jeckell.
Eldrid Simmons of the
RCAF now stationed at Leth-
bridge, Alberta was awarded
his LAC.
Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Telfer
moved Thursday to Parkhill
where Mr. Telfer has been
transferred after the closing of
the Bank of Commerce branch
in Crediton. Mr. and Mrs. Telf-
er were residents of Crediton
for the past 17 years.

June 16, 1918 - The Exeter
Canning and Preserving Corn-
pany assisted by the good of-
fices of Mr. Haviland and the
teaching staff of Exeter High
School succeeded in inaugurat-
ing the farmerette movement
in Exeter.
Lieut. Harold Swann who for
three years taught at Eden
School and who recently re-
turned from overseas visited
friends this week in the com-
munity and residents were en-
tertained in his honor at the
home of Alfred Coates.
Rev. Ernest Grigg, mission-
ary to Burma, who spent the
past year in YMCA work in
France, has arrived in Montreal
on furlough and will visit his
sister Miss Grigg in Exeter.
Rev. S.W. Muxworthy, pas-
tor of Main Street Church for
the past five years has been
transferred to Forest.

Through a $1,500 donation from the Exeter Lioness Club, donations from the Mcgeachy
Foundation and donated flooring from Doug Meikle, the Huron St. residence in Exeter was
able to install a six foot whirlpool tub for their five physically challenged residents. In
front, Huron St. resident Chris Playfoot and Lioness member Mary Lou Becker. In back

volunteers and members who set the wheels in motion over the past year.

volunteers who assisted with the events the day of the fair. Thanks to those who
