Express best Byron, stunned by Stratford
STRATFORD - The Exeter
Express senior men's hardball team
ended the week on a sour note after
a great start.
The Express lost to host Stratford
7-2 on Thursday. Assistant coach
Joe Fulop said Express batters had
several hard hit balls that died is
the brisk wind in left field as
Stratford used a left-handed
pitcher.
Stratford also used their power to
advantage ..vith two homeruns and
two doubles.
Scott Russell started on the
mound for the Express and pitched
five and a third innings giving up
five runs (three earned) on seven
hits while striking out two.
Rick Boon finished the game out
giving up.two runs and striking out
a pair.
Marty Merner turning in three
defensive gems at second base for
Exeter.
Boon led Exeter hitters with a
triple and a single, Dave Russell
added a pair of singles and Fred
Gregus, Scott Russell and Merner
added singles.
The Express edged Byron 5-4 at
home last Tuesday. Fulop
described the game as "a hard
fought victory."
Scott Kemp pitched well
allowing four runs on 10 hits with
five KOs. Mike McCabe put in an
inning and two thirds of scoreless
relief.
The game featured three Express
defensive gems: some excellent
plays by second baseman Bill
Shore, two potential steals gunned
out at third base by catcher Mark
Glavin and a pitcher to catcher to
first base double play from
McCabe to Glavin to Dave Hawke.
Exeter hits came from Oliveira
with a three run homer, Hawke
driving in the winning run in the
bottom of the ninth with a single,
two singles from Scott Russell,. a
double from Glavin a single and a
double from Mike Agnew and
singles from Merner, J.J. Anderson
and Mark Regier.
The win and the loss puts
Exeter's record at 4-2.
This week is a busy one for the
Express: they were scheduled to
host Stratford yesterday after
press, travel to Strathroy today and
Byron on Friday and host
Tillsonburg for a double header at
Alvin Willert Field on Sunday
starting at noon.
