Frank McKay's Grade 5/6 class at McCurdy Public School dedicated their garden to peace last week. The vegetable garden is a pilot project of the Kids Kitchen Table Gardens program. also part of the pilot project and are peace gardens as well. Kitchen Table Advisor Lynda Rotteau said the gardens' help stu- dents learn -about peace and caring for plants. "it gives students a place to go that has a more peaceful at- mosphere," she said. During the dedication ceremony, the students said they learned to work together. communicate. grow food and differentiate between plants and weeds. "it has been surprising how little the students knew about growing food when the project began. They now have a new awareness of the work that goes into- producing tool and a, greater respect for those who grow it;" Rottcau explained.• The garden will he part of the community. A different family will tend the garden each week the stu- dents are not in school. McCurdy's garden wouldn't have happened if mit for the response of local businesses and organizations to the requests of the students: Rot- tcau pegs the value of the donations at more than $600. Exeter's Canadian Tire, McLean's Home Hardware and the Do-lt Center contributed tools and the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority provided Iumher for the raised beds. The Hensall Compost Facility do- nated compost which Rotteau says is a factor in making McCurdy's garden the healthiest of the three in Huron County. The Children's Aid Society of Huron and Rural Response for Healthy Children obtained a gram from the Canadian Living Founda- tion to create the gardens. "This is all part of a long range plan to teach students how to grow food in all schools in the Huron Perth systems," Rotteau explained. A grant application has been sub- mitted to the Federal Environment Canada Action 21 program. If successful, the remaining schools in Huron will he able to create gardens next ycar and pilot gardens will be established in Perth. "This summer a work hook will he created for distribution to all schools containing lesson plans and garden ideas to enable any school that wishes to bcgin their own gar- den should the Action 21 grant be unsuccessful," Rottcau added.
